106.5 Toledo

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

The Buzz had a very strong following, despite it's signal it was a decent ratings getter. The Zone, would regularly get high 2's/low 3's in the overall ratings. So, to say "well nothing can work on that signal" is just dumb. I agree it isn't the best signal, Col Flagg is correct that it's good for a flanker station. For example, a soft AC "breeze" type format to just stick it to The River a little bit, for example. For example, much like The Zone was to WIOT, in a small way.

In any event, sports on there is just a waste of electricity

Yeah, 10 years ago the Ticket on 1470 and Zone on 106.5 were both good stations. Typical Cume-U-Less penny pinching and ineptitude ran both into the ground.

By the time they'd rejuvenated XKR a bit by bringing Michaels and Grizzly in,, they'd lost their chance to really kick IOT's ass because the Zone was playing wussy, girly music on the 100.7 signal instead of the harder alternative they once played.

Lets see....

1470am alone was getting low 2's , for the crappy signal. 106.5 was erratic, could low mid 2's or even mid 3's, still good for that format and signal. I don't question moving sports to The FM was a good idea in theory, in fact I had a feeling they were going to do just that at the time.

Thing is, they picked the wrong signal and not being able to get The Tigers on The FM was horribly overlooked. Turning 1470 into a talk station, honestly lost half of there audience.

It won't happen but IF they were to ever try a rock format again on 106.5, they need to launch something like what they just did in Indianapolis, except without the 70s and 80s. Say, 1992ish and newer. Not the crappy Zone again.

I do remember when The Vibe launched on 100.7, there was a rumor that 105.5 or even 94.5 at the time was contemplating on flipping to CHR.

Cumulus’ creditors are more interested in getting out of the biggest (mostly ex-ABC Radio) markets. Divesting 106.5 seems to be not as high a priority as one would have originally assumed.

If it wasn’t for WNKL and WPAY, an AM station that just can’t be sold, Cumulus would have already dumped 106.5 in EMF’s hands with the other transactions in February.

If this was 15 years, I'd say they could do a swap. Cloud gets 1520 for The Ticket, EMF takes 106.5 and puts air 1 on there. Won't happen.

Right, The goal is now to exit big markets with high $$ signals. I have a theory, Could Cumulus make 106.5 a Fulton County station? Much like 98.3 is a Monroe station? so they wouldn't have to sell it?

I think it depends on the market boundaries. I always forget what market Monroe is technically in. I know AM 560 clearly targets Detroit.

Fulton is probably in Toledo.

Far more likely that they'd formally make WXKR an Ottawa County station again. And that likelihood of that is next to nil.

Until the FCC formally forces Cumulus to sell 106.5, it'll remain in the trust for the long-term. Until then, it's a zombie station like KOKY in Little Rock, Arkansas (which has been in a trust for 12 years!).

And it's debatable if a swap of 106.5 for an AM station would have been doable even 15 years ago.

The Zone should've never been dropped from 106.5; that brand drew decent ratings given 106.5's signal limitations.
Sports radio typically bills more despite the ratings. 106.5 flipped in a time period when multiple alternative and AAA stations around the country wound up flipping because the target demos had no buying power at all, no thanks to the 2008 recession. And given 1470's deteriorating status, the move to FM was necessary.

Problem is Cumulus has never given any effort into The Ticket. None. Right decision but the wrong people to implement it.

wrong signal and piss poor execution. 10 years Alternative was not a hot format, 1470's crappy 300 watts(they were running at) wasn't cutting it anymore. They should have at least put it on 105.5, a full market signal. As I say, FM sports could do well in Toledo if someone would do it right.

I wouldn't mind seeing a 3rd rock station again. No, not the Zone again nor lest we forget, God awful rock 106. I mean, a clone of 93.9 in Indianapolis. except no dinosaur rock or very little pre 1992. 105.5 would be a good place IMO.

Speaking of The Zone, I actually remember where I was when I heard the launch of The Zone. Mid Nov 01. I remember the weekend before the flip, they actually let The DJ's say goodbye, the one mentioned they had disconnected the phones so people couldn't call and complain. I think early Monday morning, they started stunting with Swans splash down and lonesome road, I just remember the quacking duck " quack quack Key co key co key"

I was thinking it was going Urban or Urban AC. I was hoping for Modern rock but I kinda doubted it, as the cloud didn't really do the format. When the stunt music ended, they played the theme from Phantom of the opera, then went through this montage about there not being a station that played cool music. First song was " I'll be here awhile" by 311 followed by "fat lip" by Sum 41.

"No dinosaur rock or very little pre 1992"?

You know we're discussing Toledo, right? The land of "Live the lifestyle of the 80's, today!"? Unless literally every other song was Kid Rock, no one would listen.

Although I still always wonder why they bothered heavily tweaking the Zone's format from alternative to (shitty off the bird) active rock for like a month before 1470 was shut down and the talk shows moved onto 100.7.

Well... maybe there's no way to 100% avoid it, but gawd.. no 70s stuff. That active rock format was 100% satellite fed. Now, I'd say it was mediocre. The problem was they kept The Zone name and used these awful liners/sweepers. It sounded like a college station. They should of renamed the station The Buzz or like Z100.7. " Toledo's real rock, 100.7 The Buzz" " The best rock around, Z100.7.

I think they thought they could get another extension on 1470, so.. when the FCC told them to fix it or shut it down, that was really the only place all that WW1 stuff could go.

Highly likely that it was a stop-gap move after discontinuing the local music programming on 100.7 and before 1470's format (sans Tigers) could be moved over. They owned the syndicator, they had nothing to lose.

Honestly, in a way I wouldn't mind of they shut it down if it's going to stay as is, so 106.7 from Detroit would come in better down here in NW Ohio

It was a pretty odd move. Unless Cumulus really wasn’t going to move the talk format to 100.7 until the last minute. IIRC, the decision to move the format wasn’t made public until TWO days before it happened. Cumulus really should’ve simulcasted the talk for that two month time period so they could’ve given their (few) listeners a chance to wander over to FM, rather than changing formats on 100.7 for only two months.

Then again, Cumulus just moved a station in Santa Barbara without even notifying listeners of the frequency chance, so I guess I wouldn’t put cumulus past incompetence.

Once again, the problem Cumulus had with 1470 was the Dickey's still owned the real estate. I wouldn't be surprised if the lease was for 5K a month, or some other ridiculous amount, plus annual escalators. When Lew was running Cumulus, all he had to do was cut a check to Dickey Broadcasting. When you get ousted from the board, that's not so easy to do. Cumulus used the bankruptcy to get out from under the lease.

Could 1470 have been saved? Sure. But at what cost? Stay at the licensed site, and you're stuck paying the Dickey's. Rebuild, and you're probably looking at more than a million bucks.

106.5 is a lousy facility. Whatever is placed on 106.5 should reflect the population of the west Toledo metro. 106.5 needs more height. You can't get that when you build a radio tower at the end of an airport runway.
