106.5 Toledo

A place to go for those of you who wish to discuss happenings in OH, IN, IL, WI, and Ontario. OSU sucks, by the way.

I'm gonna make a wager, 106.5 will end up going to Annunciation Radio. They have WRRO in Bryan but its barley 1000 watts. All the other signals are eastward. 106.5 would cover Fulton County, Lenawee county in MI as well. CSN could be in the running too. No major broadcaster would really have any interest in 106.5.

Cumulus will sell or trade away their Detroit trio well before 106.5 is dispensed with. The creditors controlling the company want out of the largest markets they can't compete in or have seriously underperforming stations. They want them out of NYC, LA, Washington DC, Detroit and San Francisco.

106.5 is not an immediate priority and will remain in the trust for the foreseeable future. Because of this, it's way too premature to talk about any possible buyer IMO.

It is also possible that 106.5 remains in the trust indefinitely as a zombie station. Again, look at KOKY-FM and KPZK-FM in Little Rock, Arkansas... Citadel put them in The Last Bastion Trust in 2007 and they've remained in that trust ever since.

I agree they are working there way down, I do think 98.3 in Monroe may go to a small owner. I Cumulus I think is going to be like Townsquare media, in terms of medium to small markets.

Regarding 98.3, I worked there, briefly back in the mid-80s, and it was a tough sell. Monroe is caught between Detroit and Toledo. Back then, Monroe-based businesses didn't support the station very well. The decision makers didn't understand or use radio. They would advertise in the Monroe newspaper rather than use radio. It was rather disheartening when an advertiser wouldn't try to sell their product on the station. I'm talking motorcycle dealers, tire stores, nightclubs, and restaurants, etc. Also, most of those people listened to Detroit and/or Toledo radio.

Then eventually, Frustrated, the owners try for Toledo. Now, they're back in Monroe. It's probably a harder sell now, than back in those days.
Let's face it, Monroe sucks!

98.3 might as well focus on Toledo again, if it is ever sold. Since the tower move, the signal isn’t nearly as good in Monroe itself or points north. That’s why they changed the COL to Luna Pier.

Question, how long of a contract/agreement did The Cloud sign with ESPN? They had changed to CBS sports but ended up going back, supposedly because of complaints but going back didn't seem to help them one bit.

I don't know about any agreements, but they flipped back to ESPN about exactly four years ago. I seem to remember one ratings book since then where they jumped up to like 2 but then quickly fell back down.

It really doesn't matter though, they're not doing anything with 106.5. If they were going to simulcast the Zone on that signal, that would have happened when 100.7 flipped formats. They'll be more than happy to run ESPN most of the time, run Frantz's awful show in the afternoon, and have the valuable Lions and Buckeyes games so ifart can't get those rights in Toledo for 6 months, or 6 years, until a buyer is found. And even when/if that happens I wouldn't rule out the Ticket being moved to 100.7 if the Zone v4 doesn't do well.

Whoever had the idea of simulcasting WRVF-HD3 on AM1230 - that isn't a half bad idea at all, they just need to quadruple their playlist. Doing that would free-up the WIOT-HD2 stream for something different, like keeping the "regular River programming" when the analog WRVF goes all Christmas?

The ticket will likely just go away, which would leave T-town with 1230 WCWA. I hope The zone stays this time, XKR and IOT are so boring.

From Inside Radio:
FCC Picks 241 Stations For First Round Of 2020 EEO Audit.
Broadcasters at 241 radio stations, including 166 FMs and 75 AMs, can be on the lookout for letters from the Media Bureau for the first round of EEO audits in 2020. The FCC this week began sending letters to stations notifying them they’re on the list to come under review. Under the FCC’s rules, the Bureau randomly audits 5% of all radio and television stations each year to ensure they are complying with the agency’s EEO rules related to staff recruitment.

One of the lucky winners was 106.5 WTOD, Delta. :lol

How many people does that radio station directly employ? About 2, perhaps?

I think you're literally right, 2 producers. Should be funny to see what happens.

106.5 has all of two white men, if they still had 1470 AM they could have a woman as the PD and been okay, but they're so small and on the cheap by Cumulus, I don't see how they can pass. Actually, they aren't part of Cumulus technically, but part of their 'we have to dump you someday' group, aren't they?

They would have to pair 106.5 with 98.3 as a tag team at best, and figure out how to tell 96.1 Archbold what they can go do with themselves to get the Tigers back on Toledo radio, short of a miracle of WJR getting the Tigers again.
