Pretty sad state of affairs, IMO, that a station playing repetitive 80's heavy classic rock can now be #1 in a once-great radio market like Chicago.

WDRV now #1 in Chicago
Re: WDRV now #1 in Chicago
With the top station in Chicagoland with a 5 share, shows alot of listeners going elsewhere than AM/FM radio for their listening.

The Drive's stationality has always been too laid back for my taste. They do have a decent morning show, though.
With most of the market having no access to Active Rock on the FM dial and the market's other longtime classic rock station being long gone, grabbing a 5.4 share frankly doesn't impress me terribly much.
I'm more impressed by 93XRT's showing.

In Chicago, 28 stations (!!!) got over a 1 share apiece, including several rimshot FMs such as 95.9 WERV, 107.9 WLEY, 106.7 WPPN, and 93.5 WVIV. Including stations that didn't make the top 30, subscribing AMs and FMs in Chicago added up to 89.1 of a possible 100 shares, so at most 10 percent of listening in Chicago is to satellite and internet radio. In some parts of Michigan, satellite and internet might have 50 percent or more of total listening.Jeff Dugan wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 6:05 pmNot true, more people more stations bigger market smaller slices of the pie, a 5 share in Chicago is like a 7 or 8 share in Detroit the audience is there just older, thats why WCSX does well n Detroit, Classic Rock and Classic Hits do well everywhere currently, Top 40 on the other hand not so well the audience in that case is listening to other platforms mainly streaming.

XRT sucks. It's "rock" for the kind of people who'd listen to Bono or Bob Dylan's bowel movements if the labels released them.Jeff Dugan wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 8:12 pmWXRT has always been a great station in Chicago, it’s to bad no one in Detroit can do a format like WXRT, it could do well. The River 93.9 had the opportunity to do something like that but never really caught on to what a AAA formatted station should actually sound like.

I sorta enjoy 107.1 Ann Arbor and 94.5 Grand Rapids' take on the AAA format.

It's a legacy brand that was built up 40 years ago and somehow wasn't totally undermined after consolidation reared it's ugly head. A station like WXRT can't be recreated anywhere else, at least not to the degree Entercom or iHeart's "Alt" formats are literal paint-by-numbers.Jeff Dugan wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2019 8:12 pmWXRT has always been a great station in Chicago, it’s to bad no one in Detroit can do a format like WXRT, it could do well.
