Anybody listen to this station, I tune in on occasion early evening or late night, format wise I don’t think they’re that bad, does anyone else like them.

Judging by frequent discussions on this site and on others, CFZM has a very large and loyal fan base both in Canada and the eastern USA. In November, the passing of George Jonescu, who hosted the station's popular "Big Band Saturday Night" show, was noted at "Broadcasting - General" on this board.
Like with all AM band propagation, when conditions are decent (and if you don't live too close to WJR's site), Zoomer 740 is solid copy. Sometimes, though it's just not there, or in and out with deep fades.
Overall, a great 20th century music variety playlist and a number of specialty shows. Midnight Blue, "The only X-rated show on radio" is especially fun, as host Ziggy plays blues songs from the 20s thru 40s with those naughty lyrics that would be just too suggestive and risqué for airplay on US radio.

Can someone explain to me what the heck a "Zoomer" is? I never understood the name of the radio station.

The station has great reception in the Cleveland, OH area 24/7 thanks to Lake Erie.

Zoomers? they're "Boomers with Zip!" as station owner Moses Znaimer described them in an interview a few years back. and yes, he's the same guy that helped start CityTv back in 1972, and popularized the idea of the news anchor standing and moving about the station at CityTv and the NewNet (later A-Channel, /A\ and now CTV2) stations in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Does anyone under the age of 75 use the word "Zip" in that context? :razz

In any event - I greatly appreciate the info. I've been wondering about the name for quite a while actually!

I liked Zoomer 740 more when it was a blend of Adult Standards and 60s music, and before it was loaded with infomercials.

If I happen to be driving in the 6p and 7p hours, and their skywave signal can beat the noise caused by the powrr substation in my Prius, I'll listen.

There signal is not often good. WJR causes trouble in mobile reception, since car antennas don't have any nulls.

CFZM is often weak in the early evening, perhaps because I'm too close for ideal skywave reception. It gets better, though later at night it takes some hiss from the channel above it (perhaps IBOC noise after sunset at KFQD?).

Is it possible to get IBOC hash from a station way up in Fairbanks, down here in Michigan or Ontario.

Can't say for sure, but it really can throw a strong signal to the mat.

When WHO and WBZ were both HD, I could listen to neither on most nights.

In Manistique, during daytime, WCHT 600 got a lot of hiss from WTMJ -a second adjacent channel (the relatively wide bandwidth of the radio in the 1997 Crown Victoria may have been a factor).

I listen to 740 quite a bit. I even have a button set for them on all my car radios. Puts a good solid signal into West Michigan almost every night. Great stuff that you don't find on the radio much anymore.

I have a button set for it on the car radio, but don't listen that often. There is a big band show on Sunday evening I like, but I don't know how much longer it will last. The host of the show, George Josescu, died suddenly a few weeks ago. They said they were going to keep it going with reruns, but his widow objected.

CFZM does put out a good signal. I had it on my Walkman in a hotel room in GA.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Moses Znamier is a legendary media tycoon and can afford to run 740 the way it is. I can't imagine it's that profitable, with an audience whose demos no ad agency in their right mind would ever want to pursue.

The demographics of advertising could be turning.
Many millenials prefer smartphones to radios, and millenials have little money to spend.

I've suspected for a long time that advertisers have had a "gentlemans' agreement" that they do not buy radio for 50+, and buy television for that age group instead ("Ask your doctor if our new very expensive patent-protected maintenance drug is right for you").

As radio stations look to the few demographic groups with money to spend, the agreement may be falling apart
