WLEC seems to be weaker than usual lately. It used to command the channel, though it was not a strong signal by any means. Now it is quite feeble and sometimes under fellow graveyards well before sunset,
The usual path from WLEC to home is a few miles of land, followed by about 45 miles of Algae-rich Lake Erie, followed by about 3 miles of land.
I was thinking it could be weaker because that 45 miles is 45 miles of ice, but I don't recall it being so weak in previous winters.
WLEC is not the only underperformer on 1450. WHLS is now inaudible in Mt. Clemens. I remember listening to them on Detroit's east side.
Acceptable registrations in the queue through June 3 at 5:00p ET have now been activated. Enjoy! -M.W.

WLEC 1450 Sandusky signal weak?
Re: WLEC 1450 Sandusky signal weak?
Do WLEC and WHLS have translators? Those translator transmitters seem to be causing anemia in their AM signals.
I would warn them that well maintained AM Daytime signals lately have been much more reliable than the FM translators. Translators are being interfered with like CB Radio signals circa Convoy. As are formerly reliable FM signals from neighboring markets.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

WHLS certainly does. In fact, their format is Rock and they position themselves only as Rock 105.5.
As far as I know, WLEC does not.
Interesting that some AMs with translators are weak on the AM side. Why would that be? Are some stations losing the AM signal because they mount the FM antenna directly to the radiator, with no isolator, thus allowing the AM transmitter output to short back to ground?
I could understand a graveyarder in Georgia or NW lower Michigan letting their AM signal go to pot, but WLEC and WHLS are both on good soil (15 mS/m per M3, but M3 is a mess), WHLS also has the benefit of a tall tower.

I listen to WLEC at home about twice a week. And yes, they were so weak this past weekend that I actually broke down and set a preset on my Grace 'Internet Radio' for their music.

WLEC has a translator CP at 93.5 that was granted 2-3 months ago, AFAIK, it’s still being built... but at the US 250/Ohio Turnpike interchange... not at the Quonset Hut.
Who knows if the copper ground system at WLEC is up to par after 72 years?

The translator appears to be going on the same tower that WCPZ built a few years ago. Its 60dBu contour will include Norwalk and parts of Sandusky (both downtown and Cedar Point fall outside of the contour)Myron Falwell wrote: ↑Thu Feb 07, 2019 7:19 amWLEC has a translator CP at 93.5 that was granted 2-3 months ago, AFAIK, it’s still being built... but at the US 250/Ohio Turnpike interchange... not at the Quonset Hut.

That’s a puzzlement, unless they intend to run the signal in mono (they could, it being adult standards and sports PBP).
Of note, WLKR 1510 also has a CP for a translator at 92.9, on one of their towers. And the 60 dBu barely reaches downtown Norwalk. For many, however, its the first time anyone’s noticed that station in decades, clustermates 95.3 and 96.1 draw all the attention, and deservedly so.

WLEC now has a translator on 93.5.
It's of no use to me, as co-channel WRQN obliterates it.
They've been promoting the translator frequently, no only the fact it's FM stereo, but that its night coverage is better than the AM.
