7&4 problems

Post by Jim Sofonia » Wed Oct 20, 2021 5:44 pm

What's going on with 7&4. They had trouble over the weekend and still not fixed several days later. They have lost local spots and syndicated shows.
The news seems to be shortened and has "filler" programs like Spotlight America instead.

Sinclair had a cyberattack a few days ago. It's been mentioned here on the forum quite a bit.

Sister 29&8 has (not surprisingly) the same problems, maybe worse. Local news at 6:30 tonight was replaced by some national syndicated news program.

My guess was ransomware... some local news segments on 7&4 were showing the 'activate Windows' nag in the lower right corner of the screen Monday night... the reference to it being mentioned here found whiney sinklair confirming ransomware (and oh, so much more than really needed) in the Flint forum.

I don't know the legal involved with equipment, but I don't see why they (any of the stations) can't more or less simply replace equipment (obviously funds availability). Seems to me that in this day, a week of this caliber shouldn't happen.

Hey Kager, if you really want to know what’s going on with Sinclair’s hack, you won’t find it here. Come join me and my other Sinclair colleagues on the Flint forum where you can find real news.

However you’re so on the point with your last comment: budgetelevision! So true!

It's gotta be tough on the local staffers, attempting to produce local content without the tools with which they've come to rely on and having to improvise (through no fault of their own)... still...

I had to chuckle this morning during a sports segment regarding upcoming HS football playoff match-ups. The graphics overlays on static backgrounds looked like they were created on a Commodore 64.

No chance of ransomware turning up on a Commodore 64 😆

Hmm... I'm not sure, but I remember reading from someone that said they used WNEM as a backup for 4, and WOOD/WOTV as a backup for 7.

7&4 primarily used WOOD-TV for their NBC signal and WNEM as a backup. One time, I heard that they had technical difficulties in the early 70s and accidentally aired WOOD-TV's Today cut-ins sometimes.
