96.1 in manistee area

Post by hunterw » Thu Jul 15, 2021 4:46 pm

I’ve been getting a silent carrier in manistee and mason county on 96.1. 35-45dbu signal. Wonder if a new station is being launched but it sure is close to 96.3 Wkla from Ludington. Signal is the 2nd strongest signal for manistee. Only 101.5 is has stronger signal.

Has anyone else picked up this station?

I noticed the silent carrier on 96.1 when I was in Manistee over the 4th of July weekend.

I don't see anything regarding a 96.1 coming to Manistee. Not only would it be incredibly short-spaced to 96.3 WKLA, it would also be short-spaced to 95.9 WLJW and 96.1 WMAX

There is a translator at 96.1 MHz in Sheboygan, WI.

Most likely, what you are hearing near Manistee is an unauthorized pirate transmitting a silent carrier.

Just tuned in to 96.1 here in Manistee. There is a low-pitched mechanical whirr being transmitted, not unlike what you'd hear from an old turntable in operation, and plenty of splatter on 95.9 and 96.3.

Could it be RFI from one of the factories here in town?

I recall reading about a similar incident near Windsor, ON a year or two ago that was interfering with reception of a Detroit radio station - I want to say WKQI - but it was over a very localized area.

In some cases, usually older FM radios, emit oscillator radiation which might be heard for a block or so. This is at the received frequency plus 10.7 MHz. You can often hear a very low level of audio from the received frequency. But that doesn't explain the carrier on 96.1. Sometimes analog TV receivers could be heard at the received sound frequency plus the IF from Low VHF channels. If you have two, usually cheap, FM radios fairly close together, like the next room or a next-door neighbor, the oscillator of one and a very strong signal can mix to be heard all over the band of the other radio.
