WLC Rogers City

Probably the very first licensed radio station of any kind in Northern Michigan.

Too bad the FCC won't allow someone to use the callsign.

Extensive History of WLC.

Antenna supports. At one time there were several towers and several frequencies used. They left the air in 1997. I remember DXing the higher frequencies used by WLC and the frequent IDs between beeps, above the Marine Band.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Popular legend has it WLC stood for 'World Limestone Center' (which Rogers City was, maybe still is...). WLC was a critical piece of the Great Lakes shipping industry until cellular and satellite communication made it obsolete. Ship-to-shore phone calls were on Channel 26 on marine radios. You NEVER discussed anything too personal or specific if possible...everyone could listen in.

I believe that I heard WLC on 8737.5 kHz or 8759.2 kHz in the late 1960s or early 1970s, in Southeastern Michigan. It was on an old Westinghouse with a long wire antenna and it was near 9 MHz, as imprecise as the dials were in those days.
