To HGR1290 About WHGR 1290 Night Pattern

Post by CK-722 » Tue Nov 24, 2020 12:38 am

To HGR1290 and others who expressed interest in the old WHGR facility. I found the record in the Canadian Database. Apparently, they considered rebuilding a 3 tower Night array at the new WUPS 98.5 site on the hill, with 4.6 kW Night. I would assume that the parameters are either identical or nearly identical to the old pattern. Either the old site array used a series limiting resistor with 5 kW, or the power was adjusted downward to compensate for the site change. In any event, it has to be close to the old pattern. The tower orientation was 181 degrees, making the theoretical maximum at 1 degree true. The augmentations would suggest that the parameters were identical, even though the rereadiation would be different at the new site.

I swear that they used to leave it on night pattern during the day, because it would die just south of Harrison during the day. Granted GC is pretty pathetic in that area....but I always was surprised that I could hear 1490 in Midland "up north" but could never hear WHGR down south. Those parameters would form the typical three tower in line, Three "baby lobes" on the south side, and a major lobe headed north.

Surprised they considered moving the AM DA to that site....but they built that FM site a while after I left. Not sure who owned it at that time.

In between, WJGS had a tower East of there that was 500 feet high. It was near I-75 and Maple Valley Rd. It was once toppled in a fatal plane crash.
