The reason why the WFDX signal is not that good in those coastal areas is because of terrain shadowing. They do have the translator in Petoskey, on the WKLZ or whatever it will soon be as K-Love tower. Downgrading the signal is tricky due to the Atlanta COL and the hard short spacing to move in WJZQ 92.9 to serve Traverse City with a 70 dBu signal. Some stations have reduced to 51 or 52 kW to preserve C1 Class status. One of those was WKLZ for a time, which was a multiple ownership overlap consideration.

Moving from C1 to C3 would only allow WFDX to move 4 miles closer to WJZQ under CFR 47 Section 73.207. Just trying to serve just the Atlanta area, in the middle of nowhere, would be a really bad move. WBMI is a much more viable situation, and they've gone off the air.

I'm working on a sustainable facility plan right now...

I'll let you know when I figure out if there are no obstacles. I won't tell you what it is for free though.

You sound like a mad scientist with a plan. Or... a real estate agent with oceanfront property in Arizona. :smokin

Well, there is an additional restriction that I had overlooked. It complicates the situation, but it doesn't make it impossible. Have to look over some CFR 47 Section 73 Paragraphs.

The problem? The power consumption is unsustainable and many new features that you expect from FM can't be implemented.

The transmitter would need to be replaced.
The power consumption from a one-watt translator?

Even if electricity were $0.50/kWh (a high figure) and used 20w of AC from the socket (again, likely a high figure), it would cost 24 cents a day ($ 7.20 per month) to operate.

If you had a spare exciter and antenna bay and transmission close to the center of population, could you just put it on and THEN ask for an emergency STA, audio? Or could you request and get a quick turnaround? Such a facility could serve a substantial population.

if something very catastrophic happened yes, but 1 mV/m must be inside licensed service area.

Are you saying that this is with or without prior authorization?

Well, if the 70 dBu contour encompassed a small area city, an exciter and one or two bay antenna would quite easily fit within the 60 dBu. I'll have to look at all the STA and Booster rules, as I believe Boosters at least for Class B and B1 are allowed to extend to within the 54 dBu and 57 dBu respectively.

I used to get the 94.3 in Leland down in Southeast Michigan before Chatham came on the air. Before Leland came on, I usually heard Saegertown, PA on a regular basis. After Leland upgraded from nondirectional Class C3 to directional Class C2, with a null to the Southeast, I never heard it again.

Just turned on my radio to find 94.3 playing classical music... looks like they’ve made the transition to public radio.
