It was indeed at 4 pm. Had the radio on at 3:00 and it was still country. Got back in the car at 4:20 and it was KLT!

Contrast between WLAV Grand Rapids and KLT:

WLAV Grand Rapids - "we lost our tower site and are on the air from a backup site at reduced power. We've ordered some new equipment and hope to be at improved strength in weeks and full power within the next several months." It took NINETEEN DAMN MONTHS for WLAV to finally return to full power.

WKLT Northern Michigan - backfills the loss of the 98.9 signal within 24 hours! Yet, people are still bitching because it took a whole 16 hours longer than initially communicated.

93.5's coverage radius is probably almost 80 percent that of 98.9 MHz.

93.5 is a maxed out Class C2 facility (50 kW equivalent from 150 meters equivalent) whereas 98.9 is a non-maxed out Class C1 facility (100 kW from 299 meters' height is allowed, but 98.9's license is for 100 kW from 245 meters' height).

WKLZ's signal is noticeably more potent in the Straits and southern and eastern U.P. than 93.5's. That's partially due to the fact WBCM-FM, aside from having lower power and height, is located about 8 miles farther away from the bridge.

That said, 93.5 still delivers a perfectly usable signal in places such as Petoskey, Cheboygan, Gaylord, Charlevoix, etc. It just won't be a blisteringly strong signal like the one 98.9 delivers to some of those places.

The audio chain was messed up on 97.5 today. No dynamic range and overdriving the mid range. Flipping over to 98.1 on my car radio produced dramatic differences.

Let's see how Midwestern gets it dialed in.

Omelet was complaining about people walking around the station because no one is left to escort them out.

98.9 would probably have to move to be a full Class C1 facility. It is close enough to the Pellston Airport (PLN) that it can't increase HAAT much. The signal has always been good from there, since the mid 1960s, so I doubt that EMF would move. The other factor is that it is a clear line of sight into Petoskey from the far side of Little Traverse Bay. Even the translators over there do well. When WMBN/WLXT moved from Wormwood Rd. they didn't gain much, even though the HAAT was higher from SE of Petoskey, and they were closer to Traverse City.

The Boyne Highlands/Emmet Heights tower is within "Class E Surface Airspace" and is designed by a dotted magenta line. It appears that that is why the height is restricted. Maybe our resident "Pilot Of The Airwaves", radiofreedel, can explain that better.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?
