99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
Was driving thru southern benzie county and they both are broadcast in low power. 99.3 is def weaker then 92.3.
92.3 is still some sort of rock format.
99.3 is timeless 99. An oldies format. Also heard mention of 101.9 wldr while listening to it. Lol
What in the world is going on with these stations and even their TOH is off by 30mins

Welcome to Roy's World... I'm surprised they are in the air at all.

He could've been first in line as a seller.
Now, Trish already has her new shiny station (106.7), K-Love has theirs (98.9), and CMU has theirs (94.3).
Are there any willing buyers left? Doubtful.

Re: 99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
He obviously needs to keep them on the air this time around, as this is a license renewal year for all Michigan stations and the window for notifications opens in matter of weeks. Perhaps because of the legal present entanglement with Blarney Stone, he may get a pass on WLDR, but the other two have no excuse for not operating. There are several Northern Michigan licenses that could be in jeopardy of not getting renewed this go-around, due to not being on the air. Time will tell whether the commission is going to take a hard, or soft, line on this.
Re: 99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
The FCC could care less about FM unless there is a complaint. If 10 of us filed a petition to his license renewals, then it would get fun to watch.

They actually do care whether you've been on the air for much of your license term. Here's some light reading:
https://docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-17-458A1.pdf
I also suspect there's more than a handful of stations that will have public file issues that will come out during the renewal process.
Re: 99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
They must have come back on in the last couple of weeks, as 92.3 and 99.3 were completely off from mid-January until I headed south for a few weeks in mid-February.hunterw wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 3:18 pmWas driving thru southern benzie county and they both are broadcast in low power. 99.3 is def weaker then 92.3.

The ones I can see not getting renewed (none of these are certain yet, but I do see at least a chance):BigFreq wrote: ↑Sun Mar 08, 2020 7:29 pmHe obviously needs to keep them on the air this time around, as this is a license renewal year for all Michigan stations and the window for notifications opens in matter of weeks. All Henderson licenses (also, I never saw any silent STA's filed for any of those stations)
92.5 WFDX
102.7 WMOM
105.5 WBMI
105.5 WSRJ
To add fuel to the fire, there are two allocations up for auction in the next round (93.3C3 Onekama and 99.9A Custer). Relevant Radio and Smile FM are eligible to bid for all allocations up this coming round (130!)
Re: 99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
As some have said here before, it would be much better to sell than have the licenses revoked. It will take years to get these back on the air if they don't sell. People keep harping on some of the better facilities not being worth saving. It's the Class As in nonexistent towns where there are hardly any people in the service areas. Some of those frequencies up for auction don't serve that many people.
Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Re: 99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
The FCC database is a mess right now between the old CDBS system and the new LMS system, so its really hard to trace down who has done what without some digging.
Haven't seen anything filed yet for WFDX (or WFCX) going silent. But they've got 10 days from the day they go silent to file, so I would expect to see something this week.
WMOM has a valid STA that runs through April 5: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.ex ... id=1812698
WBMI has a valid STA that runs through August 24: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.ex ... id=1815292
WSRJ has a valid STA that runs through July 25: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.ex ... id=1814018

You haven't paid close attention to how things go for Roy when it comes to the FCC. Let's see how it goes.

I agree with TC Talks.
All the FCC cares about is collecting money from violators. As long as you pay, they'll look the other way.

Re: 99.3 wqan and 92.3 wbnz
It turns out that WBNZ is still on the air, though I'm unaware for how long it's been. I did some radio work at Sleeping Bear Dunes (some nice 600-mile tropo into the Dakotas on Thursday) and was surprised to run into the signal when looking for it.
It's QUIET - I need to max out the volume to listen to it at the volume of a normal station, so it's even easy to miss if you're flipping through stations. There are no ads. The very start of many songs are cut off. The signal switches to mono between many of the songs before stereo comes back on. Top-of-hour IDs are there, but they're not legal.
"92.3 WBNZ Benzie Frankfort Manistee. We are your hard rock authority, WBNZ".
Recording of the TOH ID
Because the city of license is Frankfort, it must be "WBNZ Frankfort" (etc.) with the city after the calls. Benzie is not the COL, nor is it even a city. You have only ONE thing in between songs per hour, and even THAT isn't correct. (sigh)
Station coverage is 20-25 miles. After 15 miles, my car had to be aimed at the tower (directional back window antenna). My recordings were made at 8 miles. The signal starts heavily fading at Onekama and is gone north of Manistee. I could hear it on the beach in Manistee though, though most people don't listen solely on the beach (just me). To the east, by Traverse City, it was gone. To the north, it was still in well in Empire, but I didn't go north of there. Even within 10 miles of the tower, it was very easy to still hear Frog Country. I suspect they're running perhaps 100 watts given other stations with similar setups and coverage areas in the area and how easy it is to null them out to hear other stations within their city grade coverage area. They don't even cover their entire 60dBu coverage area with a signal, fading out entirely just short of the coverage zone.
I spent almost 70 minutes recording the station waiting for their TOH ID that I heard just after the TOH earlier in the day, but they didn't do it during the hour I started recording in, so I just kept right on recording. You can hear what they play, their mono/stereo issues, cutting off songs, among other things. I mean, credit to them for... being on the air?
Listen to an hour of WBNZ
Other Roy stations, or former Roy stations:
99.3 is off. It's all B99-3.
100.1 is off. It's all Port Washington.
101.9 is off. It's WDEZ with RDS in Benzie Co. and listenable WDEZ into downtown Traverse City.

Roy Henderson should be embarrassed to have that on the air, even if it's just to say "it's on the air" to stay legal!

Sounds a lot better than Q100.
Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!
