Danny Stewart "Retires"

Post by Graham Wellington » Fri Jan 27, 2023 7:21 pm

After 47 years on the air, Danny Stewart is "retiring" from WFMK and Townsquare Media.

I share your skepticism regarding the official story. Townsquare wacked a lot of people over the past week or two, including Ken Evans and JoJo Girard in Grand Rapids.

It's Clownsquare....I bet they told Danny either retire, or get whacked. They've absolutely ruined every legendary station they own.

Don't know I'd quite go that far. WGRD, WITL and WKFR are all in very good shape. I think WITL sounds really good right now.

Cars 108 bores me to tears but still pulls strong numbers (unlike Cumulus owned CK 105 and B95).

Kudos to Danny for taking the high road and allowing this to be portrayed as a retirement. But the last minute retirement announcement, with the last day being on a Tuesday that also corresponds with the last day of a month, doesn't exactly scream "long time local radio legend going out on his own terms".

I hope he was at least compensated in return for "retiring".

I’ve wondered before if Cumulus has ever considered simulcasting one of their Saginaw signals (102.5? Z93?] on ratings loser 105.5. It would be a cost savings for them…

Either way, good for Danny. I worked with Dancing Danny briefly at WVIC in the '80s. He was a very good jock and even a better person. I wish him well. There is life after radio! He had a very long ride, and in one market. Very, very few get to say that.

Yes, this reads as a PR "retirement", so the ownersndo not get tagged with firing a local legend

He was "Disco" Danny Stewart when I worked with him at VIC in the late 70s. Nice enough guy to me, a lowly weekender basically running Casey Kasem. Was a bit dim in those days as I recall.

Believe me this is a budget cut. I've seen so many good people canned at Clownsquare because of budget cuts. The only thing they're interested in is hits to a website. They're part of The Evil Empire. Talent to them is a liability.

Gotta love the proofreading. Headline says WKFM, and it's WFKM in the body of the story.

The video report was done nicely. But the written report....wow, that's bad.

Gotta' love the duct tape on Danny's phones. What's that about?

Where are the WFMK studios now? When I worked there in '87, it was out near Williamston in a ramshackle house.

I worked with him previously. He said it was his choice.

I was 'whacked' a couple of years ago. Because the owners wanted to have my 'firing' on the record rather than have me retire. Their reasoning seems to be that if I was 'fired' rather than 'retired', it would be harder for me to find a job.
