WCMU’s transmitter building serving northeast Lower Michigan burned Wednesday, February 28. WCML-FM 91.7 and WCML-TV Channel 6, both licensed to the city of Alpena and broadcast from Atlanta, MI, will be off the air indefinitely. We anticipate it may take several months to restore full service to northeast Lower Michigan. Additionally, 103.9FM Harbor Springs is currently off the air, but we expect this signal will be restored in the coming days.
Our commitment to northeast Michigan remains strong. While we work to restore our broadcast services in the region, we will continue to bring you news and information from the northeast Lower Peninsula and all of Michigan. WCMU will remain northeast Lower Michigan's NPR and PBS station.
Acceptable registrations in the queue through April 26 at 9:00p ET have now been activated. Enjoy! -M.W.

Curiously, there was no mention if cable / sat / streaming service viewers in NE Michigan would be negatively impacted.

I asked on their FB page if this was due to a lightning strike. They replied that the cause is still under investigation.

I'd like to see the deep water well you'd have to dig for that fire suppression system, at a tower site in the middle of nowhere. The pump would probably crap out rather quickly.

Col. Flagg, not sure what the cost would be for the well (tens of thousands of dollars?) versus how long (indefinitely) for lost revenue being off the air.
