Pay to Play

“Sponsored content” is TV’s dirt little secret. Station groups like Sinclair’s 25-66 continue to run advertiser content that looks like regular news stories.

Now Sinclair could face further fines over its use of a “financial adviser” who is under fraud investigation.

It’s not the first time Sinclair has flaunted the rules and allowed our sales departments to ruin our journalistic integrity.

25-66 ran paid-for Huntsman Cancer Institute stories in our newscasts… resulting in what was then a record $13-million dollars FCC fine.

We apparently haven’t learned our lesson. Just look at 25-66’s end of newscast billboard where we list all the sponsored content that fills up our newscasts. Edward R Murrow is rolling over in his grave.

If we had stronger corporate and local station management, this would not be tolerated. Newscasts should be for news. Commercial breaks are for sales. There should never be any compromise of our integrity and journalistic independence.
