Former 25-66 anchor files federal lawsuit against Tegna

Former 25-66 morning news anchor Kristen Aguirre filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against her former Denver TV station KUSA and its owner, Tegna.

In the lawsuit, she claims that she wasn’t given reasonable accommodations during her recovery from a stroke and managers systematically made her life a living hell upon her return, scrutinizing everything from her appearance to her delivery.

Aguirre is one of three Latina women who were recently let go at KUSA, resulting in a lot of community backlash.

On her professional Facebook page, Kristen writes:
“ Sharing my story NEVER gets easier no matter how many times I talk about it but I do get stronger each time. That strength is what pushes me to speak up. Newsrooms should reflect not only different cultures and backgrounds but also abilities. Ableism is real and if my story protects one person or even inspires just one person, THIS WAS WORTH IT. Disability is not an ugly word and there’s no shame in it. If you have a disability, I’m proud of you for showing up every day. Everyone will face disability in their life unless they die young. KEEP GOING.”

I find it interesting that KUSA felt Aguirre wasn’t capable of sitting behind a desk anchoring the news in Denver following her stroke, but she was able to do the same job in North Carolina. I doubt this will actually make it to trial… KUSA will pay Aguirre quietly under the table to make this go away.

I read her story previously on her Facebook page and elsewhere. What they did to her after her stroke was unethical and she got shafted by Tegna. A decent employer would have never done that to a good employee

I didn't know that Kristen Aguirre worked in any part of Michigan. Whoever buys TEGNA will settle it under the table as Sincklair said I think it will be Byron Allen new owner of ABC12.
