WWCK AM 1570 off the air?

Post by Colonel Flagg » Fri Sep 24, 2021 3:39 pm

Is AM 1570 back on the air? There were reports over the summer that they were not powering down at night, and not long after, the transmitter failed, apparently beyond repair. Just curious.

The story I heard was that parts were needed for the transmitter and it would have taken a very long time to get them due to supply chain problems, so they bought a new transmitter because they could get it was lot faster, at least at the time. They couldn't run the 107.3 translator without 1570 AM on due to FCC restrictions.

So, 1570 and 107.3 are still off?

What, nobody can find an old LPB and hook it up temporarily on 1570, so that 107.3 can stay on??? :rolleyes

They were back on stronger and louder than I can ever remember a couple weeks ago.

The Tune In option is working. Playing "Beat It" by MJ. Now "Philadelphia Freedom" by EJ.

Good news. I remember the old "water cooled" transmitter 1570 used many years ago. I was beginning to think I would have to loan them my old LPB. :rollin

Chris Olson, who was Co CE at WAAM 1600 in the early 1970s, when they moved to the new site next to US 23 with 5000 watts full-time, had worked at WMRP...WWCK 1570 at the beginning of his career, and told his brother about the water cooled transmitter being the only remaining one in the state, and his brother told me this way back in 1971. Don't know if they still used it. For many years, the transmitter chewed up IPA tubes, and they frequently had to be replaced.

An interesting tidbit, revealed by Peter C in his memoirs, was that upon being hired at WWCK, he tried to convince Frazier Reams to sell 1570 (then WLQB) and buy WTAC. Frazier didn't like the idea... it's a shame, because that certainly could have made things interesting. One has to wonder, how much bank they were really making off WLQB. All I remember about WLQB were the billboards "Beautiful Music, Beautiful Message".

WTAC, paired with WWCK, would have been a formidable combo back in the day.
