Drone Coverage in Local News

Post by sinklair » Mon Sep 06, 2021 10:50 pm

Much like everything 25-66 parent company Sinclair Broadcasting does, the importance of drone coverage in newscasts is overblown.

Exhibit A: the two stations that have drones rarely use them… and even when they do, the pictures rarely add any new perspective to the story. Drones are simply vanity regardless of what SVP of “News” Scotty Livingston says.

I wish. Like everything Sinclair does, they F it up by over complicating it. First in order to get a drone, they require the sales department to get a sponsor to cover the costs at a four time multiple. For the drone plus to send two people to Penn State Univ. For “drone school” initial costs are over $25k. So we need to get a sponsor willing to spend $100k just to get a drone. However any kid can get a broadcast quality drone for a couple hundred dollars with zero regulations. It’s absolutely ridiculous how Sinclair runs its stations. Meanwhile we’re light years behind Meredith and Gray stations which have had this equipment well before us.

It all depends on the story. Sometimes, drones can get pictures someone standing on land can not.
