Who proofreads this crap?

Post by sinklair » Fri Mar 06, 2020 10:12 pm

On 25-66’s Facebook page:

“So, what happens if you have a warrant from Art Van. We asked the question.”

First it’s “warranties” — not “warrants.” Second, they left off the question mark. Come on guys, it’s basic 4th grade grammar.

And just so you don’t think this was an isolated mistake, here are other sloppy social media posts from Mid-Michigan NOW over the last couple of hours...

Example #2: “JUST IN: A popular Fenton store has announced it will be closing.” If the Red Fox Outfitters was popular, it wouldn’t be closing...

Example #3: “The coronavirus is not the first epidemic the United States has faced.” — really?

Example #4: “Woman hits train in Tuscola County.” — should be “woman’s car” crashed into train.

And if you think 12 and 5 are any better... nope! Does anyone proof these posts before publishing? How do managers allow this to go on?

Maybe they are taking volunteers.

When I dated the News Director for WUPW, before he left for Floriduh!, he explained that he wanted to be the first station on with the story. His thought was that people will stick with the station that has news first. Accuracy was not even a consideration.

Toledo's 13abc (WTVG 13-1) does not check facts at all. Never had. They misreport way to much. Also notice allot of typos and misspellings.

Point being... You were caught in their trap. It worked. You just advertised for them. Just like I did as well. Oprah is not the only person skilled in getting free advertising. The news sources do rather well in this area... Well, at least enough to be talked about.

Teddy: I work for 25-66, so I’m not accidentally getting caught in the “trap” or publicizing them.

My concern is that these mistakes make us look silly. It’s not your “Uncle Joe” who is typing too fast after having a few drinks making these types of avoidable mistakes. This is being done by so-called professional journalists.

This isn’t even a case of an isolated mistake. You can go to all of the local media Facebook pages and see mistake after mistake.

25-66’s “in over her head” News Director preaches about trust and accuracy, but then allows this sloppiness to occur daily. It has a corrosive effect on our “brand”. And if you don’t think viewers notice, just read the comments. They do.

It’s hard to work for a news organization that — time after time — shows that it can’t do even the little things right. There’s no pride for taking time to doing things right. We should at least strive for that level of performance.

We walk into the building daily in amazement that current management is still in charge despite years of neglect. We wonder who Management is going to make the scapegoat next. And we wonder when the bottom will fall out and they either shut down this place and hub out news from Grand Rapids or another market.

We are worried. There are good people who care and do good work. But we are constantly undermined by poor management who doesn’t know how to build a ratings, promotions, and programming strategy that will make 25-66 competitive.

While there have been some back end technological improvements, that has not translated into audience growth. And Sinclair’s top down, one size fits all approach and biased corporate must runs have poisoned any audience good will.

There used to be some real optimism on Pierson Road. But as “the Purge” happened and we lost people who cared, had a clue on how to build a real newscast and weren’t afraid to say no to the accountant in chief, the ASSistant GM and the Director of Declining Sales... now we’re left with “yes” men and women.

The News Director means well and works hard but is in way over her head and is micromanaged by the corner office and regional group news director. She’s been with Sinclair for multiple tours at multiple stations so she’s not going to bite the hand that feeds her. But she doesn’t even live in the market, can’t watch us and our competition at home... so that sends a message to everyone else about her commitment. It’s not a great place to work right now and there are many people just waiting to ride out their contracts before jumping ship.

Stink
You’re the last person that should be criticizing others for not proofreading. Your run on sentences could use a coma or two. Also, you tend to use a lot of unnecessary words when trying to get your point across. The use of more words doesn’t always translate into better writing.
What it shows is a writers immaturity in their craft.

If you want to improve your place of employment, learn how to write properly, and learn how to express an idea clearly. #dishwashers

Another example of Beer gaslighting. Don’t bother to address the concerns laid out... just criticize the poster. Sounds like he’s 25-66 management. Completely oblivious to the mindset of workers. But let’s pretend that everything’s OK since we spent 50-cents per person on grilled cheese and cold hot dogs. And if you want to criticize others for their writing, you might want to go back and edit the many, many misspellings, bad grammar and wrong punctuation from your previous posts, dude. #pot-calling-kettle-black

Beer: “What it shows is a writers immaturity in their craft.”

3rd grade English teacher: It’s “writer’s.”

Beer must not have attended the year of school when they went over possessive nouns.

“Now that your paying attention”

You’re. As in “you are.” You must be Management... criticize others but can’t get it right yourself. Go back to school, Beer.

And try to actually address the concerns that 25-66 employees have been addressing here... as opposed to trolling.

Good for you! I’m proud of your progress!
Keep up the good work!
Now, the next step is for you to improve your writing, comma placements, word usage and overall originality.
What I failed to mention in the original post was, you also tend to use the same material over and over again.
It becomes monotonous.

I left another mistake in there for you to find.
This one is a bit more difficult.
Well, it’s not really a mistake, but more of a poor choice.

Let’s continue to play the game!

Oy! Ladies..... stop. This is not the drag bar or Rupaul's show! Please respect the rest of the board. Take it to 'private,' if it continues. Thank you in advance.

This is incredibly disrespectful to your coworkers. It’s one thing to call out bad management but to refer to the work your colleagues are doing as crap in a public forum simply because they make some mistakes is just wrong. If you’re in a position to assist them, then you should do so instead of insulting their work. If you are not in a position to assist them, then keep it in the control room like the rest of us do.

Herm: I’m calling out management. There is a lack of institutional oversight over these social media platforms that allow these easily correctable mistakes from being published. That clearly falls on management to fix it. We have a process in place to review stories by multiple people before it goes over air. Why isn’t there a similar process for web stories and social media posts? You worked at 25. You now work in Detroit. This crap would have been fixed by now by managers who care. The problem we have now is managers who have priorities misplaced at 25-66.
