History in the making

Post by sinklair » Wed Dec 18, 2019 9:28 am

Today, President Donald John Trump will become only the third president in US history to be impeached by the US House of Representatives.

So what will you see on Sinclair owned Fox66? Fox News coverage of the debate and vote? Nope. Instead, we will be airing judge shows, trash like Jerry Springer.

Is it because 66’s management doesn’t want to air hours of anti-Trump coverage? Is it because they can make money in commercial advertising? Yes on both counts.

But when it comes to the pro-Trump side, 66 sent a reporter to West Michigan to preview and cover President Trump and VP Pence’s visit to Battle Creek. Did they need to do this? No. WWMT could have provided 25-66 coverage.

The station will say that it is airing the impeachment debate and vote on the non-Sinclair owned WEYI... which is true.

However, WSMH has an FCC license to operate in the public good. You can’t speak out of both sides of your mouth. You can’t preempt impeachment hearings and then do blow out coverage of a Trump political rally. There’s no way this news team can have any credibility. Fair and balanced my a**.

But then again, the GM cares more about money and kissing corporate butt cheeks than doing the right thing.

Give me a break. There is no obligation to cover national content.

With C-Span and all the cable news channels covering it, the smart decision is to stay with normal programming to give viewers who don't want to watch it or are tired of it, like me, a choice.

Many of you have said “journalism is dead”. However when it comes to a clear story of importance —the Sinclair run WSMH Fox 66’s decision to mainly focus on the Pence-Trump visit and to not air the impeachment debate is exactly the point.

If you claim to be a real journalism station, then you have to cover big developments like today’s impeachment vote... and you have to cover both sides... every time... no exceptions.

Not everyone has access to cable. I understand that there are other ways to watch the impeachment debate. But that fails to answer the station’s responsibility to act in the public good. You can’t be serious that Jerry Springer is more important than the decision whether or not to impeach a sitting president.

Let’s call a spade a spade. The GM is only concerned about money. He doesn’t care about journalism. He doesn’t care about the news department’s reputation. Journalism is dead because you have bean counters in the corner office who don’t care to do the right thing... but instead he only wants to focus on what makes an extra buck.
