Tornado coverage

Post by uncleducky72 » Thu Feb 29, 2024 3:01 pm

Have to get props to WOOD TV8 for their coverage of the recent storms that came through southwest Michigan. I would think that WWMT weather would do a lot better job in doing live coverage instead of breaking into programing. WOOD TV was following this weather cell soon it came across the lake. WWMT just post on their Facebook page with nothing live on tv.
WWMT did go live coverage on tv but was little late as most of viewers would have changed the channel to a station that was live on the spot coverage.

WWMT seems to have lost what they mean of Live Local and Protect. They were very far from it on this day.

Grade:
WWMT gets a D
WOOD gets a A+
WXMI gets a B+

I would be curious to know how much on-air time WZZM devoted to live coverage of the tornado warnings along the I-94 corridor.

George Lessens was on the air continuously with the weather from at least 11pm, when I turned on the TV to catch the news until 1 am. They too did a pretty good job of covering this storm.

Good to hear; thanks for the info.

13 definitely devotes more resources to that part of the DMA than I can remember in decades.

Fox17 was painful to listen to… Reece didn’t really know what to say and paused every few words. You could actually hear Hailey feeding him lines to say on air. I wish she would’ve just done the coverage…

I was surprised that Hailey wasn't doing the weather for 6PM was she doing Facebook Live coverage? WWMT may only cut in unless there is a tornado seem like they were on at 10:30PM when the tornado warning was issued I was watching Wood TV along with WWMT & Fox17 don't really watched WZZM did see the Kalamazoo skyline when I flipped to them. For weather I just watch channel 8, 3 & 17 for coverage. Wood TV has the best weather coverage in West Michigan.

We shouldn't be surprised by the lack of attention given by WWMT. It's literally become amateur hour at that place.

Kind of sad to see a station that for its first 30 or so years on the air didn't cover the I-94 corridor at all do better than the Kalamazoo-based station!

Channel 13 covered the storms along I94 wayyyy better than WWMT, hands down. When the tornado warning went out channel 3 kept the CBS feed going, never even broke in till 11 news. 8 Stayed with the storm from east of Benton Harbor across the southern tier/I94 corridor. Great explanations of what we were seeing on radar too. Even went to the North Webster, Indiana from time to time.
One thing though...go to the Consumers Energy and Indian Michigan power outage websites. Almost instant outage gets posted on their sites.
And then there is this guy on YouTube...covered the storms from Western Illinois all the way east. His coverage beat the TV and The Weather Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4EaNoXlJEY

WZZM had a translator on channel 12 in Kalamazoo beginning in 1965 until the FCC ordered it to cease operation in the early 70s due to the sign on of WUHQ.

The station prominently included mention of channel 12 and "Kalamazoo" in marketing materials.

13's live storm coverage from earlier this week is posted on YouTube.

The frequent tower / skycam shots from the Grand Rapids area as tornado warnings were in effect 50+ miles away (with no imminent threat of severe weather anywhere near Grand Rapids) were annoying.

Does WZZM have no ability to pull up skycams from the Kalamazoo & Battle Creek area?

I watched some of WOOD TV's coverage on YouTube of the Van Buren County/Lawton area tornado warning. Impressive job as always.
We all know the reason why WWMT is pathetic.. eight letters, starts with S, ends with R.
