New meteorologist at WOOD-TV

Post by BeeZee » Fri Jan 19, 2024 8:16 pm

They just announced that Scott Larson has joined the weather team.

Take care, Bernie.

Sounds like a damn good hire! Interned for the legendary Tom Skilling plus has five years of chief meteorologist experience in a TV market (Sioux City) where everything from blizzards to large tornadoes is fairly common.
Morgan Wallen is a piece of garbage.

Hope he’s not as stiff forecasting as the awkward welcome announcement.

I didn't see anything wrong with it.

Mr. Larson was in the same college class with Ellen Bacca at Valparaiso U. in Indiana.
Scott came here from a TV station in northwest Iowa, which certainly experiences the full four seasons as we do in Michigan. Memo to Scott: two words: "Lake Effect."

Have a feeling that Ellen is going to leave WOOD TV since she had the baby and wants to be a stay-at-home mom. they will appoint this new guy the chief meteorologist since he has the experience.

She has about as much passion for reporting the weather as Bill Steffen does. I don't see her leaving too easily, but perhaps stepping back somewhat over the next several years.

Reminds me of a young Rick Mecklenburg.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Ellen's passion for the weather still outweighs her desire to be a stay-at-home mom (and I'm pretty sure it was that passion that earned her the Chief position over her colleagues with higher seniority). BUT, with so many other people on the weather staff, I wouldn't be surprised if she starts doing fewer on-air shifts and maybe does more behind-the-scenes work from home.

At least, until her child is older to where she can go back to work full time.

I always enjoyed Mecklenburg. I felt bad when he had his issues and I hope he is doing well now. I met him twice and he was a genuinely nice guy.

I kinda think Ellen B. wouldn't have been named chief without a commitment to stay there for a while,. especially given WOOD-TV's more recent tradition of long-term chief meteorologists... (Steffen, James, etc.)
