Jim Costa going to mornings on The Ticket after Mike Stone retires

Post by OneBigFan » Thu Sep 21, 2023 1:18 pm

Been 2 years since ESPN 96.1 fired Costa replacing Big Drew and Jim with ESPN programming.

Costa went home to Detroit, landed with The Ticket doing fill-in. He’s been named the co-host of Costa and Jansen along with former NFL and U of M lineman Jon Jansen.

Good for Costa.

" “Costa & Jansen” will be heard weekdays from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. ET beginning in February 2024, following the conclusion of the Lions season."

Now that's optimism!

Technically the Lions season is over by October 1, anyway.

Haven’t paid much attention to the NFL lately?

So where is Jim's former on-the-air partner Drew McCarthy from their old 96.1 morning show GR days?

Good. He was obnoxious. Costa carried that show.

Isn't Drew (or Droo) in the Cannabis business these days? I recall seeing a news report along those lines.

Correct on Drew. He is currently the GM of Boco in Middleville.

I always felt Drew was the 'show' part of that dynamic. All respect to Costa, but Drew pulled him out of Sports Nerd into an entertainer. Maybe it was all the time he spent on WSNX with Holmes that helped him know where to lead things.

I was never a fan of the Detroit washouts on 96.1, Henson was just a shell of himself and Baligian literally sounded like a disinterested man in his basement.

I think they're both incredibly talented and still can't believe iHeart couldn't sell the show, especially since they beat H*** consistently across demos. Another casualty of poor conversion due to weak sales/management.

Baligian would've been better flying solo or having one on-air partner. His former show with Tom Kowalski was very good radio.

I think 96.1 suffered when ESPN broke up Mike & Mike in the morning. They usually were top 5 in demo locally. It was all downhill from there. The current morning show from the Michigan Sports Network - which just lost its clearance in Metro Detroit - hosted by the Lions' PA announcer (who seems like a nice guy) is unlistenable. No one wants to listen to a parade of obscure guests. 96.1 needs to go in a different direction in mornings. Simulcasting WXYT-FM's new morning show beginning in February would be ideal.

Sports Radio in Grand Rapids is completely insufferable garbage right now.

Third rate collegiate athletic programs must be paying iHM a decent chunk of change to air their contests on 96.1.
