Featuring a cache of old commercials... national ones, but also local retailers such as Amway, Randy Disselkoen, Old Kent, Cole's, Meijer, AAA of Michigan, Stahl Buick/BMW/Datsun, WCUZ AM 1230 and FM 101, and Highland Appliance...
Also, old WOTV ID slides, NBC promos and a Newscenter 8 open.

Channel 8 stunk in those days. They basically gave their news operation a complete reboot in 1983. New anchors, new weathercasts, new studio, new branding, and new helicopter. The product by 1984 was leaps and bounds better than 1981.

The station was still owned by Time-Life, 9 years after they sold their other TV stations to McGraw-Hill. 1983 was when LIN Broadcasting acquired channel 8, giving them a shot in the arm.

Highland Appliance ad...VCR in 1981, $569. In todays money, $1852.71. The 19" TV at $286 today would be 931.27. The steel belted radial tire ad at the beginning..$42 bucks then would be $136.76 today. Both the TV and VCR are obsolete at any price today. The tire price really isn't that bad though compared to todays prices.

Where TVs are concerned, you could buy a 50-inch flat screen today for half as much as a 1981 19-inch CRT TV in today's dollars.
