Rob Brandt retiring

Post by RockerTim » Fri May 19, 2023 10:53 pm

Just happened to have the radio on WLAV after work today and heard Rob Brandt talking about it being his last Rock Report and that he is retiring. I liked listening to him. One more familiar voice in the air gone. I wish him well.

From Rob's FB, unfortunately it didn't appear to be his decision:

And Now; The Rest Of The Story:
My contract ended on 12/31/22 & was not renewed.
Almost 2 weeks ago I was presented with a contract for A LOT less money & a new position (same show time).
I did not accept the terms of the new contract.
Basically my management position was eliminated along with others.
I retired from the LAV airwaves but I am not retiring.
Who's Hiring?
Thanks to one & all who have supported me in the past 29 years at LAV & thank you for all the very kind comments the past 2 days.
I Love You, My Rock-n-Roll Brothers & Sisters!

Well, that's not cool that they pulled that on him. He was very gracious and played some good songs on his last show that tied into the theme of it being his last. At least they let him have a last show and get to go out in style vs. just being dumped like his former colleague was.
Am I really getting to be part of such a small group of people that like DJ's? I can hear those generic classic rock songs anywhere, anytime I want. I liked the Rock Report. I like a little local personality and to hear about local shows and artists. Without a DJ, it's easy to pick SiriusXM etc. to hear a wider variety of music. I can sometimes trade the deeper cuts/variety for a local DJ that keeps things interesting. Long live rock & roll!

Rob is a class act. His FB post only stated the facts nothing more. I hope he lands on his feet somewhere. The WLAV ratings are finally starting to go back up and this isn't going to help that!

Is this a Townsquare station??? This sounds like something they'd pull on an employee.

I hope someone else in the market hires him ASAP.

I wish I could've heard his final shift on LAV.

I wonder who will be responsible for day to day programming on LAV moving forward?

I believe Laurie Allen (sp?) was also forced into “retirement” by Cumulus. The industry continues to change at warp speed. As few live jocks we have in Grand Rapids (and everywhere else) right now, there’ll be MUCH fewer in the next couple years.

Gregg is a masterful programmer that will take WLAV higher than it's ever been.

I love MrsWarmth's posts. :)

Does anyone know who will handle on-air duties in afternoons on LAV moving forward?

I certainly agree that Mr. Brandt is an excellent air talent (and a decent programmer, too, who's probably had to deal with far more than his fair share of B.S. from the goons in Atlanta thru the years).

I want to say he was part of WLAV since their first day as a classic rock station; is that correct?

I heard Kim St. James on in Rob's Saturday Slot. I think she would be a good fit in the Afternoons.

No disrespect to Kim, who does a good job in multiple other formats, but I am unsure if her style would be a good fit for LAV.

I doubt they will hire anyone full time at this point as it's all about money. If Kim isn't the best fit she'll at least be a decent fill in until a decision is made. We'll see who is on this afternoon.
