Country radio revenue numbers

Use ctrl + F to query "Grand Rapids," or "Kalamazoo" or "Lansing."

B93 in 2018 outbilled WTNR by a nearly 6:1 ratio! :lol

Yet Cum-u-less sticks with that format on a fairly powerful stick - WHY?

I know that format decisions are probably not made at a local level but doesn’t someone above see this and give a 💩💩💩?

Are they posting BIA data?

Correct.

I just noticed the hyperlink isn't working on my smartphone. I'll try to fix that by tomorrow morning.

Correct.
We always measured power ratio for apple to apples comparison. I used BIA to determine if I would work with a radio group when I consulted. WGN would blow your doors off back before the grand ass got a hold of the place.

For those who may be unable to click the link, B93 reportedly billed $4.1 million or $4.2 million that year while WTNR billed only $0.7 million. Muskegon's WMUS billed $1.1 million.

Other numbers:
100.7 WITL in Lansing: $2.8 million (very impressive)
102.9 WWWW in Ann Arbor: $2.0 million (also impressive)
94.5 WCEN in Saginaw: $1.3 million
94.1 WWDK in Lansing: $0.8 million
98.5 WNWN in Battle Creek: $0.7 million (this number seems too low; I'm skeptical)
95.1 WFBE in Flint: $0.6 million
99.5 WYCD in Detroit: $10.5 million
93.1 WDRQ in Detroit: $1.6 million (LOL!!)
99.9 WKKO in Toledo: $3.2 million (very impressive)
98.3 WMIM in Monroe / Toledo: $0.5 million

Not much of a country guy, so I don’t really listen to the stations, but I would think W4 would be cutting into WDRQ. Same ownership so it could be a business preferring to pay Ann Arbor over Detroit rates. How many businesses in western Wayne and SW Oakland advertise on the station?

I would bet that all of us together on this board made more than WDRQ.

As for W4, it might be licensed to Ann Arbor, but it IS the country station of choice on this side on 275. Many businesses will have that station on, and most that listen to country out here are W4 P1's. Better playlist? Better production/stationality? More local flavor? I'm not sure. But you're more apt to find W4 listeners than any other country station out this way.

Their signal is surprisingly crappy in Plymouth and Northville much of the time.

102.7 HD I'm sure.

That's definitely part of the problem.

W4's TX site relocation several years back didn't help, either.

When WDKL moved to Oak Park, I will say the zone of noticeable interference didn't expand as far westward as I had feared. An already choppy W4 signal in Novi and Livonia became noticeably worse, though.

Four million for a top rated station in a market that size is embarrassing. I know YouTubers who make more than this...

How do radio groups stay alive?

1) This is 6 to 7 year old data! Numbers have changed.. AND HAVE GONE DOWN (as they tow away my leased Porsche)
2) The take above certainly shows some ignorance about the business. YouTube has an international audience, and yes, YTubers are making a mint based on ad placements on videos. Radio revenues are and will be limited by the number of listeners any one station/cluster can reach. No one.. and let me repeat NO ONE has been able to figure out an international streaming ad based audio solution.. except for YouTube. I know many people who listen to You Tube music video playlists and accept the ads as part of the "payment" necessary.

Okay back to trying to find some other owner who will let me trash their stations. Ciao!

4 million is peanuts. I've been out of the business since 2005, and this is embarrassing.
