Isn't WNWZ a full blown urban now? It's still listed as Urban AC?

Grand Rapids doesn't need nearly as many full power FM stations as a Major Market. There are not enough people to support that many.

The original spacing rules and classes precluded that many stations. In retrospect, those newer drop in rules and too many move ins/squeeze ins were a mistake for Grand Rapids.

It looks like the other AC stations have added more Urban AC tracks, and the WNWZ translator has lost nearly half their audience. This appears to be happening in other markets with other translators and Franken FMs like WRME-LP, with other formats like Classic Hits. The more powerful and easy to tune stations have responded. LTTG but it's working.

Current based top 40 and country song product is crap right now. That said, 105.3 Hot FM's rise is surprising! They have pulled ahead of 95.7 in 12+ and are now "hot" on slumping SNX's heels.

I'm not convinced this is anything other than a 1 book aberration. Time will tell. WSNX really isn't even trying anymore; the station has such a complacent, stale vibe to it.

After a couple bad surveys, WFGR has recovered very nicely. They are not only unfazed by 101.3's flip to Oldies, they appear to be benefiting from it! 98.7 is probably the P2 station for many of LAV's P1's.

101.3 chose the wrong format, it would appear. 60s and early 70s oldies no longer have mass appeal. Not an appropriate format for a 50,000 watt FM stick. They should've went Variety Hits or Urban AC instead. Their horrible numbers are proof positive big radio sucks at both research and self-marketing. I'm pleased to see 101.3 has not negatively impacted 1480 in any discernible way.

Phenomenal book for Michigan Radio WVGR. That share is at or near record high levels for them, which matches the pattern of many NPR news/talk stations nationally. On the opposite end of the scale is WGVU-FM, where perhaps the loss of the 95.3 translator hurt them. (Was 95.3 rebroadcasting 88.5 illegally? By that, I mean is 95.3 required by its license to only translate an AM signal? I presume 95.3 is still rebroadcasting AM 1480, as has been the case since last November.)

Unusually crappy book for ESPN 96.1. Changes in ESPN's national programming schedule have likely hurt them. 1340/106.1 appears to be the beneficiary from that.

These Top40 numbers are the result of SNX, Lite & Hot all sharing the same music with nothing special between the records. Obviously, listeners just don’t care which crappy station they get their Arianna Grande from.

Hot FM can for sure celebrate because from these numbers it looks like they had the best book in the market. I wouldn’t necessarily break out the champagne with a 3.7, but after years of being SNX’s step child they can say they actually have a pulse.

My prediction is you’ll see these 3 station bunched within 1.5 shares of each other for the near future with neither dominating the mainstream market like SNX had done for years.

As far as the 95.3 signal carrying Real Oldies, Yes, that was the case when I punched it up last night.

Nice to finally get numbers from WJQK. Whoever estimated it to be near a 2.0 share was right; a few books ago, that's a nearly 10 share between the two major Christian stations in town.

What do you think the numbers would look like if one took out half the stations but not necessarily the bottom half?

Even more interesting: Hot FM mornings with Gray & Green:

Adults 25-54 a solid #4
All Women demos solid #3

Those are certainly unusually strong numbers for them.

I think Connie's passing has hurt 95.7 and has benefited 105.3 and 105.7. A great loss for 95.7, no doubt.

When is 95.7 going to figure out its post-Connie strategy for mornings? I was still hearing "Connie and Curtis" mentions during station IDs last weekend.

Will 95.7 resort to syndie garbage from Seattle as its sister station in Lansing recently did?

My advice would be... Listen to La Poderosa WMJH 93.3 FM in Grand Rapids. Then pretend you are at a nice Mexican restaurant ordering a chimichanga.

Funny how we have forgotten radio is a theater of the mind as my friend would say.

So the only all female show is in third place in females? I don't know if this says more about the audience or the show?

Given the fact that it is a fairly new morning show in a very competitive morning market, I would consider #3 25-54f to be a major accomplishment. Give credit where credit is due. Without having access to the numbers, I assume they jumped 5 or 6 spots in this book.

Traditional mumbo jumbo like females don’t like listening to females, or never play 2 females back to back is just absurd in today’s radio environment. Throw out the stale Boys Club “rules” and realize this is 2021 not 1921. I applaud Lori Bennett and the team at Hot for taking a chance. It seems to be paying off.
