1660 Kalamazoo "The Fan" flips to Urban Format

Post by leadsquirter » Tue Dec 01, 2020 9:46 am

What the heck is going on here? The touch currently on 1560 and 95.5 is now also heard on 1660.

WTOU 1560 is a Daytimer, 4.1 D3. WQLR 1660 is Fulltime, 10/1 U1. I don't think you can flip the translator to 1660 as the originating station. The AM and translator go together. The WRTH designation is clearer than the FCC designation in this case.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

That translator originally simulcasted 98.5 WNWN, then was changed to simulcast 1560. With that in mind, it may not be that difficult to change station orientation for a certain translator. But what do I know...

I think they changed it to an AM translator.Under current rules, there are restrictions to separating the translator from the AM station associated with it. This may change in the future, or there may be exceptions. If anyone has the link about this, please feel free to post. There was a difference between translators authorized before and after the AM translator auction.

This is a bummer! Do we really need to give up Sports in Kalamazoo to have three signals broadcasting the same thing?

The 95.5 translator is not subject to that restriction, The restriction that bonds a translator to an AM station for five years is for those translators that were moved-in from up to 250 miles away for use by an AM; 95.5 was not one of those.

My guess is 1560 will go silent or be sold.

Are they trying to extend an olive branch to Battle Creek listeners who lost their station when 930/102.7 went Oldies? 1660 can be heard across much of the state, especially this time of year. Neither 1560 nor 95.5 has good coverage in BC.

With respect, this entire thread has me feeling like Mark Hamill in a TV ad with Patrick Stewart...... Huh, What???

If I Heart GR really wanted to save money, it would sublet two of it's three floors at 77 Monroe Center.

Glad to hear 1660 has switched to music since they are in stereo. When I'm in the area I tune them in...the sports talk is mono, while their local commercials sounded great! I'll be passing through Saturday morning and will definitely be listening.

Anyone who listens to The Touch in Kalamazoo almost assuredly does so on 95.5 FM.

No posts have been made to 1660 The Fan's Facebook page since - get this - July 1!

How about another switcheroo - I'd LOVE to be able to hear Jack FM on FM 106.5. Move WVFM to FM 96.5. I can dream, right? :hat

I listened to WQLR 1660 briefly 3am Saturday as I was traveling through Kalamazoo. The station had a really good stereo sound with good separation. I also tuned in the translator on 95.5 for comparison. Separation was much better on 1660 and bass was deeper on the 95.5.

It's too bad the car stereo can only receive WQLR on I-94 from mile markers 74 to 81, as it would have been nicer to hear the station longer.

Yeah, I’m with you there. 1k night and I lose it just outside the county boundary. Day is 10k, but more like an FM 10k.

Stereo button is lit.

I got something on 1660 when I was in the Detroit area recently. Was this the station?

If it was playing R&B, it was. WQLR's signal really gets out toward sunset, especially this time of year.
