WFUR 102.9 off air

Post by originalzzmfmjock » Sun May 17, 2020 5:29 pm

I've noticed WFUR-FM 102.9 has been off the air the past couple of days. I'm guessing it has something to do with their impending sale. Interesting to hear what comes in on 102.9 while FUR is off the air.

Cool!

Maybe folks along the lakeshore can pick up the awesome rock station from Milwaukee! (Much better playlist than the junk WGRD plays.)

I bet 103.3 WKFR has a great signal in the car around G.R. at the moment.

Are you receiving WMKC Indian River? If so, I'm sure Black Diamond and Del would like to hear a recording.

WWWW Ann Arbor and WHQG Milwaukee are also possibilities.

They went off the air Monday morning the 11th around 6am. I was able to pick up the HOG out of Milwaukee along US-131 just east of Sparta as I was awaiting the fly-over of the A—10 Warthogs on Tuesday. Living in western Muskegon County at Duck Lake WFUR was strong enough that the best I could ever do was get a jumbled mix of the two.
And if WFUR is going to be anything like 99.9 out of Kankakee....Yikes!

It's going to a near replica if not an exact replica of 99.9 Kankakee.

BBN has bought a few failed commercial stations in the past, such as:
630am St. Louis MO (2013)
93.7 New Iberia/Lafayette/Baton Rouge LA (2014)
95.5 Ogden/Salt Lake City UT (1994)
99.9 Park Forest/Kankakee IL (2018)
104.5 Carolina Beach/Wilmington NC (2015)

Their Facebook indicates on the 13th: "WFUR has now fully transitioned to AM1570 and FM92.9, so if you hear silence on FM102.9, please tune over to our other 2 frequencies. Thank you!" and that BBN will start up in about two weeks (from the 13th, that is).

All Big Country here in Fremont with a side of W4. Big Country is quite dominant. The Hog comes in usually, but not with lake conditions how they are today for sure, throwing up a wall where signals fear to tread today. I swear I was listening to WFUR far less than a week ago and wondering when they'd switch and if they'd announce it and have some kind of proper sign-off.

Meanwhile, WYBR had been on low power for some days (Sat. and Sun.) without RDS though seems to be back to normal now (unsure about RDS though). Even in Newaygo, they were fading out if a building was in the way, whereas they are usually a very strong signal.

And 97.5 Whitehall has been on low power for some days too, at least 2 days if I recall correctly, including currently. 20 miles away and it's hard to get a clear signal from them. Crappy audio and fading a lot on the car radio and on the portable. KLT has been breaking in easily and ZOK at times too, both pretty normal here.

97.5 Nash has been on lower power for a few weeks now. It’s a mix of them and KLT to just about Shelby. To the south the signal starts to get staticky just south of the Muskegon County line. By time you drive by the GH football field they are quite staticky and just south of M-45 are all but gone!
Here near Duck Lake 102.9 is a mix of BIG country and the HQG.

Did 97.5 move to its new site in the NW tip of Muskegon County many weeks ago, or is the weakened signal possibly the first transmission from their new site?.

I'm impressed by Big Country's signal traveling *that* far south! That's pretty remarkable.

Thank you, both, for the info. (I never knew WFUR AM/FM had an active Facebook page, by the way.)

I heard WOOD-FM 106.9 a few months ago right after WSRT 106.7 went silent, up near Gaylord. The silent stations do open up some opportunities that might be rare in an FM band now jammed with stations, digital sidebands, and translators. I remember driving up I-75 back in the mid 1980s, when you could go through 2 MHz or more on the dial without hearing anything but white noise.

WOOD has a pretty wide coverage, so I wouldn't be at all surprised of that reception (I've heard much the same even when 106.7 was still on).

I was in Pentwater a couple of weeks ago and 97.5 was all KLT there.

With 102.7 AND 102.9 off the air, I have been getting 102.7 WRVM Suring Wisconsin fairly consistent and 103.1 WGDN Gladwin mixing with WOGB Reedsville Wisconsin. Gladwin being dominant.
