WFUR-FM Now WYHA!!!

Post by CK-722 » Sun May 17, 2020 6:12 pm

Almost no secrets in radio. Was looking to see on CDBS if there were STAs, etc. Nothing came up for WFUR-FM. Checked for Grand Rapids area on fccdata.org.

They filed for a Silent STA, as they are delayed by travel restrictions (Not sure that applies here, I thought federally licensed communications activity like this is exempt.) to install a dish and prepare for new programming.

The Kuiper Family managed to sell to a broadcaster who'll put on programming that'll appeal to an even tinier audience (much tinier, in fact!) then their programming.

Great. Shortwave band-type programming coming to a 50,000 watt blowtorch.

If this isn't proof AM/FM broadcasting is on its death bed, I don't know what is!

I wonder what will become of AM 1570 and FM 92.9? Are those off the air, too?

Are they selling WFUR (AM) and the translator?

Filings and other postings about WYHA

Post by statmanmi » Sun May 17, 2020 6:36 pm

CK-722 and I had the same idea--look for FCC filings. To paraphrase the retired WOOD TV 8 engineer as he once posted in a national TV forum, something along the lines of, "The great thing about TV is that everything is a matter of public record." Although in this case it's radio--but still all has to be filed and granted by the FCC.

In late Feb./early March, a change in ownership was filed to transfer and request the call sign changes:

https://enterpriseefiling.fcc.gov/datae ... e&goBack=N

A blurb on this page:

http://www.insideradio.com/free/deal-di ... 90c47.html

Includes a summary (which answers MWmetalhead's thoughts from a few minutes ago, coincidentally):

"Bible Broadcasting Network has closed a $2.75 million deal to buy contemporary Christian WFUR-FM (102.9) from Kuiper Stations. WFUR-FM becomes Bible Broadcasting Network’s first station in Michigan. It plans to change the station’s call letters to WYHA and change to a noncommercial station. Kuiper Stations still owns WFUR (1570) in Grand Rapids and religious WKPR (1440) in Kalamazoo, MI."

I'm finding no further mentions of the AM stations having upcoming changes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Then, just last week, a Silent STA was filed for 102.9 WYHA, as CK-722 noted:
https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.ex ... _num=22918
With these explanations provided:
CIRCUMSTANCES OF SUSPENSION OF OPERATIONS
ON MAY 11, 2020, BIBLE BROADCASTING NETWORK, INC. ('BBN') ACQUIRED THE ASSETS AND LICENSE OF STATION WFUR-FM, GRAND RAPIDS, MI (FAC. ID 22918), AS AUTHORIZED BY FILE NO. BALH-20200227AAC, GRANTED APRIL 6, 2020.
ON MAY 12, 2020, BBN SUSPENDED OPERATIONS OF WFUR-FM PENDING CONVERSION TO NONCOMMERCIAL EDUCATIONAL ('NCE') STATUS PURSUANT TO FILE NO. 0000106685. BBN IS ALSO CHANGING THE CALL SIGN TO 'WYHA.'
A SATELLITE RECEIVE DISH ANTENNA MUST BE INSTALLED AT THE WFUR-FM TRANSMITTER SITE IN ORDER TO RECEIVE PROGRAM MATTER FROM BBN'S HEADQUARTERS IN CHARLOTTE, NC. IN LIGHT OF TRAVEL AND QUARANTINE RESTRICTIONS CAUSED BY THE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, IT IS MORE DIFFICULT THAN USUAL FOR BBN'S TECHNICAL STAFF TO PERFORM THE TASKS NECESSARY TO CONVERT WFUR-FM INTO AN NCE STATION. THEREFORE, BBN IS TEMPORARILY SUSPENDING OPERATIONS BY WFUR-FM UNTIL THE TECHNICAL CHANGES CAN BE MADE. IT IS HOPED THAT THE CHANGES CAN BE MADE WITHIN 30 DAYS, BUT IN AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION, BBN IS REQUESTING SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY TO REMAIN SILENT UNTIL OPERATIONS CAN RESUME.
Cheers! ~~ Statmanmi
