New GR Nielsen Audio ratings (March 2020): WBFX falls to all-time record low

Post by MWmetalhead » Fri Apr 24, 2020 8:12 pm

What iHM has done to 101.3 is beyond disgraceful.

A piece of garbage nationally produced playlist that alternates wimpy post grunge alt tracks with classic butt rock with just a handful of good hard rock material thrown in.

A HORRIBLE white trash morning show host from Cleveland who has an ego the size of Montana.

For the above "efforts," 101.3 has been awarded a....1.0 share! :lol
Even 101.7 WMRR managed a 0.6!

Other items of note:
- Nice rebound for B93
- Blunder 107.3 remains a ratings dumpster fire
- Wow, this next one surprises me: the music shift at Magic 104.9, at least for now, appears to be working...at least in the ratings. Up to a 3.2 share in ages 12+. A new record high for them.
- And guess who 104.9 hurt? Not surprisingly...WSNX! They're down to a 4.6.
- With WSNX inching downward and WLHT inching upward, those two stations are suddenly neck-and-neck.
- Star 105.7 took a big tumble. They often do so in springtime. WTRV also has witnessed a big ratings decline, although theirs has occurred over two months, not just one.
- Newsradio WOOD finished just a whisker behind B93 for top place honors.

The four dominant stations in the market are definitely B93, WOOD, WCSG and WGRD.

WSNX, WLAV, WLHT and perhaps Star 105.7 represent the second tier.

101.3 went from 15 to 10 listeners.
If they played a continous loop of Joan Baez songs, that would actually help them and Maybe 107.3.

This is probably the lowest score also for 105.3 since probably Whip FM days, I guess the Gray and Green show is more gray and bringing a LOT less green for cumuless.

I want to say 105.3's all-time record low is a 2.2 or a 2.4.

For a station that supposedly plays "consensus" music, and does so on a 50 kW signal, WBFX's 1.0 share is truly stunning. That's especially true when one considers the fact WLAV and WGRD collectively command about 11 shares worth of listening.

101.3 needs to ditch the asshole in the morning, go back to a music intensive morning show, return to a standard classic rock playlist, and call it good. That is, of course, unless rock music is dumped completely, which frankly, might be a better way to go.

Even in this horrible market environment, iFart *is* making format changes. They're on the verge of making one in Atlanta.

Remember, WBFX was primarily put on the air to give Clear Channel / iHM added exposure in men 25-54 (complimenting WOOD) while helping B93 remain atop the A25-54 throne (by depriving WLAV of audience share). With the strength of B93 & WOOD as a tandem, and with WBFX performing a good 60% below its long term AQH share average, I honestly don't see where WBFX adds any value.

I will give some Cumulus some deserved credit relative to 94.5. For Adult Alternative, you really cannot ask for much more than upper 2's, especially for a relatively young station in that format. The station probably punches above its weight class in A25-54; wouldn't surprise me if they are north of a 4 share in demo.

That being said, 105.3 sounds absolutely terrible right now (pukey voiceovers, horrible dynamic range in the processing, and a girlie morning show juxtaposed against a kiddie nighttime show), and I think a lot of people aren't even aware Country music is available at 107.3 FM. I also think a disproportionately high percentage of Nash 94.5's fan base came from Hudsonville, Zeeland, Holland, Allendale and Grand Haven areas. 107.3's signal ranges from so-so to lousy across those regions. I think some of those folks might've tried making the switch to 107.3, heard crappy reception, and gave up.

105.3 would've been a better place for the Q and WHTS could've gone to 107.3.

I rarely ever listen to 101.3, hasnt been on my presets in about 4 years, IFart should switch WOOD-FM to 101.3.

Switching WOOD-FM to 101.3 would defeat the purpose of WOOD-FM being on 106.9. WOOD made the move to simulcast with the Muskegon station to get better coverage in Ottawa county and the lake shore. When WOOD-AM went to 20,000 watts, but directional north 24/7 is severly crippled their coverage area in Ottawa county. The 106.9 signal takes care of that problem. 101.3 would not help in Ottawa County or along the lake shore.

Having AAA on 94.5 gives former listeners of Z96.5 in Kalamazoo a landing spot, as 94.5’s signal is decent to good in the Kalamazoo metro. Plus, MW is right with the high 2’s... but it could get as high as the low 4’s down the road.

LAV's ratings have come back up dramatically since the 3.0 in December
