Fall 2018 Nielsen Audio #'s for Grand Rapids

Post by MWmetalhead » Thu Jan 10, 2019 7:13 pm

Headlines:
- Rover ain't so glorious; WBFX's 12+ ratings hit new all-time low.
- WLAV dips but not by a ton
- WSNX surges to return to first place
- WHTS ratings are in the toilet (SNX kicked their ass by a massive 3:1 margin)
- Secular Christmas music generates little if any ratings bounce

First things first, I was completely wrong about Mojo in the Morning's ratings potential in G.R. but completely right about Rover on WBFX. WSNX is soaring high; WBFX is at an all-time low. I think WBFX's 1.2 share might be the worst AQH share in the history of the station, dating all the way back to Mellow 101.

The fact WBFX's ratings continue to sink even as WLAV operates on reduced power should be absolutely alarming to everyone at iHeart.

105.3 Hot FM is losing and losing badly. That 2.6 share is their worst result in years, although they came close to a result that shitty maybe 18 months ago. They aren't only taking heat from WSNX. They are also getting scorched by Mix 95.7. WLHT's 5.8 share represents a new high in the Hot AC era of the station.

Whereas All-Christmas stations in other markets - espeically PPM markets - are often to generate a 7, 8 or even 10 share effortlessly, the ratings of Star 105. in fall 2018 were no better than summer, while 100.5 The River improved upon its summer numbers a bit but still finished behind where it did in spring time.

Other notables:
- The Radio-Online site published non-comm results this time! WCSG and WVGR (WUOM) are both forces to be reckoned with, scoring a 5.6 and 4.7, respectively. WGNB scored a 1.6, which is in-line with their norm. Grand Valley State's stations didn't fare so well, with GVU-FM checking in with a 0.8 and GVU-AM checking in with a 0.5.
- Both All-Sports FM stations had terrible showings. Piss poor Red Wings and Pistons teams and uninspiring college football performances from MSU and to a lesser degree U-M likely played a role. Both WBBL and WMAX checked in with a 1.3 share.
- WTKG scored a 0.1 share. Why is this station even on the air?
- For the first time ever, we get a peak at Public Reality Radio's AQH share. They checked in with a 0.3.

Well MW, you and I have been been on this board for what seems like an eternity discussing just how God awful the programming has been at Hot FM. As SNX surges, you have to wonder when somebody is going to walk into that building and politely say to the staff “ We are getting our asses kicked by WKQI Lite, WKQI part 2, Detroit and Grand Rapids Simulcasted #1 hit music station. It’s an embarrassment, and it’s unacceptable.”

Reality check. Your direct competitor is 6 shares ahead of you in the latest Nielsen and just went #1. At what point does it sink in that something is wrong here.

In the meantime, we see a station like Lite, who had been struggling, turn the corner and have a great fall book. Things that make you go hmmmm.

It's funny yet sad when a mellow Soft AC (100.5) station geared towards for 60+ with a mediocre signal beats a 50kw top 40, even more funny when a 50kw classic rock that can safely reach Lansing is beat by a tiny R&B translator (104.9) TBH with how horrible 101.3 and 96.1 It might actually be smart to put alternative on it, I'd be for Adult variety hits.

Yes, something's got to give here, although I'm wondering if iHeartRadio even really cares...(Cumulus is at least starting to move some chess pieces, so maybe 2019 will indeed be the year things finally change around here.)

After seeing the ratings results in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, it is safe to say that West Michigan listeners have Christmas music fatigue.

Hopefully, all local stations start their Christmas music marathons a good three weeks later next year.

RadioInsight reports this was 95.7's best 12+ share since 1998!! It was 104.5's best 12+ share since 2002!
