930/102.7 in Battle Creek flips to Classic Hits

Post by MWmetalhead » Fri Sep 13, 2019 7:33 pm

Potentially a good move; I thought 104.9 should've adopted this format as opposed to Alternative. Hopefully Midwest does the format justice in Battle Creek unlike their piss poor attempt at Classic HIts in Lansing @ 92.9 FM.

I wouldn't count on it. I have been tuning into AM 930 this weekend and it sounds like they are just piping in the Classic Hits format from Westwood One. The Westwood One format skews a little older, focusing on music from the 70's and 60's with some 80's thrown in: https://www.westwoodone.com/classic-hits/classic-hits/.

I wonder what the motivation was for the change. The Touch's 12+ ratings in Battle Creek have been on the upswing. The Touch actually performed better in Battle Creek than in Kalamazoo during the Spring 2019 ratings period. Could a format change be on the horizon for 95.5/1560 in Kalamazoo?

Wouldn't surprise me if the format change was because they couldn't sell the Urban AC format. Some may remember when B95 as a CHR went under almost 30 years ago because the urban/rap product they played made it impossible to sell the station despite top ratings. Urban AC stations today play much of that old-school hip-hop. I understand Battle Creek is rather conservative politically so I wouldn't be surprised if that constituted another roadblock. There's that Gospel-formatted LPFM as well which likely attracts some of the older African-American audience. Lack of local programming may not have helped either, since I believe the UAC format was 100% WW1 as well. I wouldn't hold out hope for addition of local programming in the future.

Is this the same syndicated format Midwest runs on WTVB?

You're right, Michigan Media.

Spring book ratings were excellent for 930 / 102.7.

I had no idea the ratings were that strong (although, it *does* make sense that the station attracted a sizable audience given the fact Calhoun County is ~11% African American and lacks R&B music elsewhere on the FM dial).

Must've been a sales issue, as Chris noted. The fact the vast majority if not the entire sales staff is accustomed to selling a friggin' COUNTRY station likely didn't help.
