Misplaced WCSG billboard

Post by MWmetalhead » Tue May 12, 2015 11:47 am

Saw a "Commercial Free, Family Friendly" billboard for 91.3 WCSG on eastbound I-94 yesterday.

That - in & of itself - isn't so unusual.

What *is* unusual, though, is the location where I saw it.

You see, this advertisement happened to be along eastbound I-94 just east of ALBION! The billboard was very close to the Calhoun / Jackson line.

I tuned my radio to 91.3 just for fun. All I heard was mix of white noise and brief glimpses of audio from WCSG and Toledo's WGTE.

How about simulcast partner 91.9 WCFG? Heard nothing but white noise. Not even the tiniest glimpse of programming audio.

Would love to know how a billboard for a Grand Rapids radio station winds up that far away.

My first guess would be this posting is "cover copy".

When billboard companies sell ad space, they will sometimes have incentives/promotions to get you to sign...like "free" placements or "cover copy"...as in they'll hang your vinyl or posters (the paper stick on type of ad on smaller "furniture") when they have "open" space to fill. As you know, there are some billboard facings that are very successful and others that are...not so good.

So they load up these "cover copy" locations in the middle of BFE with these "bonus" ads. Much like a radio station giving you free nights/overnights/Sundays.

It keeps other advertisers thinking "wow, maybe I should have "my" message up there".

That would be my guess. Otherwise, if they are paying for a placement out of the coverage area then they really are not minding their "dollars" wisely.

Do you suppose WCSG pays the same rate as, oh, say IHeartMedia?

WCFG is 90.9.

I seen it too the other day, it was close to the "church" station that is located along 94 in that area. so maybe they are just showing off.

Was it advertising 89.9 (its satellite for Benton Harbor, WCXB), or just using 91.3?

...which, at 700 watts and broadcasting from near Augusta, would also be too weak to reach Albion:

Is Cornerstone ever going to do anything productive with the former WAYG-FM in Grand Rapids?

I presume the other signals will simply continue to simulcast WCSG.

There is a WCSG billboard just north of Coldwater on 69. When you tune into 91.3, it is a translator station for Star 88.3 out of Fort Wayne. Assuming you stay North on 69 towards Lansing, you may never come in contact with the 91.3 signal. Seems like a waste of money. They could in the least put a little blurb over their standard marketing saying that the station could be heard on 90.9. They could do the same thing with billboards in Kalamazoo and Benton Harbor areas.
