John Alan

Post by andymuskegon » Sat Apr 25, 2015 10:42 am

John Alan passed away Friday morning. He worked in Muskegon, Grand Rapids and Houston for a career and founded WAXT in Whitehall as his retirement job. Great guy, and I sure wish I would have known him longer than I did.

John Alan was my mentor in the radio business. He was a great jock, a better engineer, and an even better person. He will be missed. He was a great guy to work with and for, to compete against, and a great friend.

John's career started in Grand Rapids in 1965 at WYON-FM (101.3). He lied about his age to the owner, telling him he was 18 when he was really only 15. From there John went to WGRD in 1966 to 68, WZZM-FM in 1968-70, WVIC 1970, WAFT 1970, WLAV 1971-73, back to ZZM in 73-75, back to LAV in 75, then on to his radio career in Muskegon. John worked at Super Q, WLRQ 95.3 from 1975-77. WMUS 77-83, WCXT in Hart 83-84, back to MUS 84-87, then took his engineering skills to Houston Texas and KLOL from 1987-2004. He returned home in 2004 to become Chief Engineer at WLAV and retired from LAV in 2012 to pursue his dream of owning his own LPFM. His dream came true last year when real gold radio 98.9 hit the air in Whitehall in May of 2014. Unfortunately for all of us John only got to live his dream for about a year, but he did get to live his dream. Rest In Peace my friend and hopefully we will meet again some day.

Andy,

This is very disappointing news. John, well, he was John. Bigger than life, with stories that kept on going. He will be missed in the engineering field, but his fun started with his own LPFM. Some ten years ago, when I did the engineering for WMUS on a contrctual basis, l I found a drawing penned by John. It showed the ratings war between WCUZ and WMUS. I may have given it to him, or its buried in the basement, but it was classic John.

He was so kind to me for the years I worked at Citadel GR. The nicest guy on the planet with so many great stories... and he always took a couple extra minutes to help me with whatever technical mess I got myself into. Such an awesome guy.

RIP John.

As a friend of yours Jim I know how you feel because you have always spoken highly of him whenever we have talked. There can be no bigger tribute than to reflect fondly.
