And now, a classic aircheck from 104.5 WSNX from January 1995
The station was still known as "104.5 Sunny FM" at the time. I believe it was summer 1996 when the Sunny FM moniker was ditched. If I remember correctly, 1996 was also the year the station began making major ratings gains in the Grand Rapids market, cracking a 6 share for the first time in 12+. By 1998, the station would take on a very Rhythmic lean.

The fact a station with so-so to downright lousy indoor reception in parts of the Grand Rapids urbanized area has earned mostly great ratings for the past 25 years is quite remarkable. The engineers have worked hard maximizing the signal over the years.
Soundgarden on a Top 40 station. I like it. I knew Black Hole Sun received a lot of CHR airplay (including from 104.5), but I honestly don't remember "Fell on Black Days" receiving airplay on Sunny FM.
I thought Sunny FM sounded great from a music standpoint during this era.

Heard Mike Sinclair (current WTCM-FM morning personality) Say he was doing a djing gig at the now defunct Club 911 and thought to myself "Were many of the so called good ol' days really all that good."

I wonder where that place was located? If it was along S. Division Ave. in the ghetto, then "Club 911" was a very fitting name.

Club 911 or Top of the Rock was on Alpine Ave not all that far from Swan Inn.

9-11 was top of the rock, the alabi and way back when, the thunder chicken. kiss and bob seger both played there. and i lied about my age after i couldn't play football anymore due to cracked vertebrae in my neck and got a job as a bouncer. it was a "teen nightclub" and parking lot duty was usually the best. we'd shine lights in the car to inspect for booze...we'd find the booze and say "look, either you give it to us, or we have to call the cops" always worked out good.MWmetalhead wrote: ↑Sun Apr 23, 2023 4:52 pmI wonder where that place was located? Good story and thanks for the info. I do remember riding past the Top of the Rock when I was a young lad.
I remember hearing a ton of commercials on the radio for the Apple Core Lounge in the late 80s to perhaps very early 90s, a bar near Gun Lake that evidently featured local bands.

WSNX was already reporting to Radio & Records as a Grand Rapids market station by January '95. Keith Curry was their music director at this time and would later work in the same capacity at WDRQ in Detroit. Mark McGill was the PD.

I believe they moved next door to WODJ near I-96 and 28th St either in late 95 or early 96. The today's best music tagline was briefly changed to "your hottest music" (or something similar). Then, by summer 1996, the station was completely made over in the image of 101.3 KDWB, dumped the Sunny FM name for good, and became Grand Rapids' Hottest Music, 104.5 WSNX.

Small potato being thrown here, but the Top of the Rock was where the Gerber Collision shop is, south of Vitality Drive on Alpine NW.
There had been a bar/restaurant with bands down where the Alpine Township Hall is, (Cleo's?) 6 Mile and Alpine, and before Fricano's, us long time locals enjoyed Mr. Fables' fare at Vinton and Alpine NW.
At the time of this aircheck, I was listening to Rob Brandt/WLAV on my evening commute and Pat Cassidy of 670 WMAQ on the way to work.
