Part-Time Board Op

Post by ppr7997 » Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:49 am

Hi, I'm in the IT space by full-time trade but have always had a passing interest in broadcast. Highly technical and have live sound experience as well as radio experience from college (granted it was a couple decades ago). I see occasional part-time board-op jobs but they don't detail what hours to expect, other than it includes night/weekend. Wondering if there are jobs available in that space that are "evening/weekend" only, since I have a FT job also. I suppose I could just apply but does anyone have direct experience w/this role in the GR market?

Generally, those part-time board op jobs are ONLY nights/weekends. Prepare to work for $14/hr at best and to work very sporadic and unpredictable hours from week to week, often with only hours or a day or two head’s up. You will be expected to work your personal life around the job, not the other way around. If you can’t drop everything and come to work at the last minute you will be met with a “they must not want to be here very bad” sort of attitude.

Forgive the extreme honesty but if you’re seeking to “move up” beyond being a PT board-op you’re very likely wasting your time. That’s not personal to you, just the way the industry operates in 2023. Being promoted, at best, means taking on more responsibility for zero increase in pay. You will also receive nothing in regards to benefits. Most industry newbies voluntarily leave relatively fast once reality sets in.

You probably will get more listeners with a podcast.

Appreciate the candid replies. Not seeking to break into the industry full-time or as a career, I already have a career in IT. Just figured if I was looking for PT work as a side job, having something nights/weekends, may as well do something I like which is audio/sound-related/broadcast.

I'm guessing most of these positions are running board for live sports events. Probably not a bad gig if you're just looking to score some extra cash. Mostly weekend work although there are games scheduled during the week, primarily at night. Hours will fluctuate, and as mentioned, there will be times when you're expected to be available on short notice. Might be a decent side gig for someone who is flexible with their time and doesn't have a lot of outside commitments, but I would certainly take that into consideration and ask the potential employer what their expectations are before jumping in.

If you want to move to the other side of the state, we’re looking for an IT Support Specialist. Great pay & we definitely need extra help in our feed bay. Which is kinda like being a board op. Here is the link
