Pete Meijer throws his hat into U.S. Senate race

Post by MWmetalhead » Mon Nov 06, 2023 8:37 am

I'm glad he is running.

Tough choice for me between him and Mike Rogers.

I think it is safe to say James Craig's candidacy is virtually dead.

He was an idiot for voting for an impeachment of a President who was no longer in office. He should have abstained from voting instead of supporting the Democrats in that move.

But - he's probably a big step up from Craig. I don't know why Craig is in this race, unless he just wants to burn though other peoples' money.

I think the Republican party should forego a primary and just pick either Rogers or Meijer and run with it. Dump all the money that would have been spent (by any candidate) into the general and make sure they take that seat. It should be a 'call to arms' or 'all hands on deck' with an achievable gain.

I think winning a statewide GOP primary is going to be an uphill battle for Meijer.

Will West Michigan voters - who are largely unfamiliar with Rogers - "forgive" Meijer and vote for him this time?

Will anti-Trump Oakland County voters who've voted Republican in the past (but not necessarily in 2022) be willing to cast a vote in the 2024 primary?

I appreciate his candidacy, but I think he might've had an easier chance winning both a primary and general race running for his old Congressional seat.

I'm not interested in any candidates from Grand Rapids.

Amash, Meijer and now Scholten, who couldn't beat Meijer the first time.

I've already given the seat to Slotkin. The population centers in this state vote democratic.

Rogers lacks credibility anywhere except Oakland County. He's an unknown to much of the state.

Thoughts on whomever the Republican nominee may be parlaying Slotkin's vote against censuring Tlaib?

I’m voting Slotkin.

Meijer sure sounds like a flip-flopper on Trump.

Typical politician with his finger in the air to see from which direction the winds are blowing.

I expected better of him.

I am now leaning toward voting for Mike Rogers.

Apparently, you haven't been paying attention, because this is exactly what I would expect Peter Meijer to do. He's an opportunist. Whatever it takes to win.

I like Mike Rogers, but I'm not sure I like that he's been living in Florida for the past several years, all the while giving the illusion that he's still in Michigan.

Prior U.S. Senate candidate, Sandy Pensler, who lost to John James in the 2020 GOP Senate primary, is running again.

I thought no one ran in the 2020 GOP primary that it was just John James? I remember Sandy Pensler running in 2018 and lost to John James in the 2018 primary which wasn't a close race. Sandy has no chance with Meijer & Rogers in the race along with the former Detroit Police Chief I hope he got all his I's & T's dotted this time around and isn't DQ'd.

From what I’m seeing Pensler declined to run in 2020 and John James was therefore unopposed.

Good memory, guys. You're each correct. James ran for Senate in both 2018 (where he defeated Pensler) and in 2020.

I had forgotten 2020 was James' second Senate race.
