So now Democrats believe people have a right to work AND make their own choices?

Michigan poised to ban employers from firing workers for having abortions

Voting for Trump is dumber than playing Russian Roulette with fully loaded chambers.

I haven't read the whole thread because you guys going back and forth is tedious for me.
Has a woman actually been fired for having an abortion? Or is this a a solution in search of a problem?

This is what I was going to ask when I got done reading all the comments. I myself haven't heard of anyone being let go because they had a abortion.
Is this bill introduced by Rep. Carrie Rheingans just feel good legislation for her re-election? She can say "Look what I did" when it didn't need to be done .
Edit:
Looks like Craig and myself were pondering the same thing at the same time.

If you read the article CAREFULLY - is that asking too much? - this is the legislature cleaning up laws and policies that are now unconstitutional with the passage of Proposal 3. So while there might not be a case of someone being fired, this isn't a "just in case" law. This is a legislature that is going thru the books and making sure the laws match up to the current Michigan constitution.

HIPPA makes the law pointless. An employer would never know unless the employee advertised it.

Why stop there?
Why not make every employee part of a "protected class" and prevent employers from discharging employees?
Think of all the jobs we'd save!! (/sarc)

An employer would “never” know that a woman was pregnant and suddenly she isn’t, and there’s no baby?craig11152 wrote: ↑Sun May 14, 2023 8:42 amHIPPA makes the law pointless. An employer would never know unless the employee advertised it.

In this case it’s pretty damn obvious and word would get around about it. The rumor mill is a well oiled machine. You work at a bus company… have you not noticed how vigorous it is and how news travels at the speed of light there? That secret would last about 3 seconds.craig11152 wrote: ↑Sun May 14, 2023 8:42 amHIPPA makes the law pointless. An employer would never know unless the employee advertised it.

Re: Michigan poised to ban employers from firing workers for having abortions
A vast majority of abortions happen well before it is obvious somebody might be pregnant.
Furthermore the democrat's have had complete control of state Government for 13 years since Roe V Wade originally passed. Why wasn't this brought up before?
And since we are an "at will" state an employer doesn't need a reason to fire anybody.
So the truth is this bill is just grandstanding.

Or, these laws are now invalid, so why not remove the ambiguity?
Lord knows there's enough junk in our code that could stand to be cleaned up.
Michigan citizens want access to safe abortions.

Re: Michigan poised to ban employers from firing workers for having abortions
Roe V. Wade guaranteed the right to an abortion and was considered settled law and it was thought that the Supreme Court doesn’t reverse itself. Then Dobbs happened. So the thinking on this has changed pretty substantially vs what it may have been 40 years ago.craig11152 wrote: ↑Sun May 14, 2023 9:24 amA vast majority of abortions happen well before it is obvious somebody might be pregnant.

They may not need a reason to fire anybody but we do allow for exceptions, so if it can be proved that’s the reason and it’s illegal then the at-will part doesn’t apply.

Which protected the right to an abortion not necessarily the right to employment. So why didn't those democratic Governments fix that loophole? Too stupid to think ahead?

Or so we've been told.craig11152 wrote: ↑Sun May 14, 2023 9:24 amA vast majority of abortions happen well before it is obvious somebody might be pregnant. ...
Perhaps that's not really accurate, and hence the "reason" for the push on the new law?

Who knows? Because it wasn’t done before can it never be done? Should have thought of that the day after the decision in 1973?craig11152 wrote: ↑Sun May 14, 2023 10:20 amWhich protected the right to an abortion not necessarily the right to employment. Seat belts were obvious the day the first person flew out of a car that crashed… it took 50 years or more to standardize them under law.
