We should be focusing on why we have homicidal maniacs roaming freely. But that attention would most likely show massive failures in mostly republican lead sheriff's departments.
Fixed that for you
Explain please.

It's pretty clear. People who shouldn't be in possession of firearms are breaking laws that mostly Republican Sheriff's choose to ignore.

No Republican wants to protect Americans by preventing against gun violence. Why aren't we seeing weapons seized like cops like to publicize drug busts?

Because it's not those sheriff's that are responsible for areas like Detroit and Muskegon.

If people aren't storing guns safely now, is this law really going to make them? I'm struggling to see how requiring background checks on shotguns is going to stop gun violence and mass shootings. This is political grandstanding.

Well… we closed all the mental hospitals the state ran and said the private sector could do better. Thanks Engler. Not sure what was done in other states but the era of guys in coats showing up to take you away in a straight jacket are kind of over.
Those hospitals closed all over the nation. How did Engler pull that off??

There are plenty of illegal guns throughout Michigan

National trend probably... but here that was spearheaded under his leadership.

He must be going senile. Engler launched the most aggressive cuts to mental health supports in the nation. He closed facilities with no plan for patients. Engler is largely responsible for homelessness in rural Michigan in the 1980's and 90's which killed hundreds of former patients of state hospitals. Lots of documentation if you choose to look online.

Celebrate!! Someone put on that Kool & The Gang song....no more mass shootings here in Michigan....
By golly Gretch, just like the time you saved our lives back in the Covid days by making us walk down the aisles one way at the stores...you've come up with a fool proof way to stifle mass shootings here in Michigan....
Maybe she'll make the aisles in schools one-way to stop the shootings. Yea, that's the ticket! That'll do it!
Here’s a foolproof way:
Get rid of the guns. Just like a screwdriver screws… well… in a screw. And a hammer drives in a nail… a gun is a unitasker. It’s sole purpose for existing is to kill things. Shooting contests and target practice are sidelights akin to axe throwing before somebody claims there’s some other reason for a guns existence.
Those tools can be misused, just like a gun. In fact, they have. Many murders have happened with both screwdrivers and hammers. Should we eliminate those too? What about kitchen knives, like the one that just killed Bob Lee? Get rid of those too?

I'm tired of seeing the same old worn out arguments while people get scraped off the tarmac, so I say call me when suicidal maniacs get their rights.

If that was really the problem, then why hasn't Whitmer and Co (the legislative majority) worked FIRST on proposing a plan to reinstall them, or come up with a suitable "21st century" replacement?

Actually, 82% are Republican... So nice try.

https://wholeads.us/research/americas-sheriffs/
the report says that about 90% of the nation's sheriffs are white men even though they are 30% of the population. And that's an even more - how can I say this? - skewed demographic than exists in most police departments these days. Is that correct? How did that come about?

CARTER: That's right. And for us, that's a real red flag. When we see something like we see with sheriff's offices, which is tremendous power combined with an extreme lack of accountability, that raises real questions about who that position serves, whether it's even a position that makes sense at all and what it means for democracy and sort of the functioning of society that those combination of factors are all concentrated in one position.

Guns are a bigger priority, but DHHS is being restructured to better meet the needs. The Republicans have left a mess and it is going to take time to fix.

Do you have any experience with this population? I was the guardian of a homeless person with mental illness, the legislature starved the DHHS and it's a mess.

New legislation isn't the solution, holding sheriffs accountable is a solution, and they're old Republican white men who just don't care.

Sorry you couldn't keep up.
