Local and county roads remain in crappy shape in many areas across the state. State & federal roads are in decent shape. Federal dollars plus bond proceeds helped state & federal roads but not nearly enough of that money made it into the hands of counties and municipalities.
They only passed it a few months ago… it’ll take a few years to get it out and things improved further for both bills.

The governor can't change a county, city or township that refuses to pass millages for their roads.

Or a city whose funds who have been mismanaged by shitty mayors like Warren had been for 30 years….

While what you wrote is certainly true, it is also true there is revenue sharing between the state and cities/counties/townships when it comes to road funding, and that revenue sharing is out of whack.

In Michigan, cities/counties/townships also have less funding options available than in neighboring states. Neighboring states have local sales taxes as an option, for example.

Holy shit, are you calling for more taxes?

Welcome to the sunny side of the street.

As a former leader of a county in a state with that funding mechanism, it doesn't work when you factor in regional economic hubs.

In your suggested model, Grand Traverse would benefit greatly at the cost of Benzie, Leelanau and Antrim counties. Kent vs Allegan Ionia, Muskegon and Ottawa.

Regardless, the Republican legislature drew up this funding model not the governor from either party.

I've long advocated for greater local control and flexibility with regard to road funding.

I also provided a comprehensive proposal for changes to state tax law and funding allocations on this forum a few years back, and yes, that proposal did call for some new revenue sources.

The general funding framework for roads has been in place for decades. All the legislature has done in recent years is juice the gas tax rate a bit and approve increased allocation of general fund dollars toward roads (mostly as part of the annual budgetary process).

My objection is that more road funding comes at the cost of things like education and hhs types of funding.

Gas taxes will need to be replaced eventually. I like a mileage based funding but people would just register their vehicles out of state like the Arizona/California situation.

I've learned quite a bit from this thread! It helps explain why US 23 in Washtenaw County is smooth and flat and has the flex lane, yet the minute you get into Livingston county, it is only two lanes and feels like the Flinstones car wash.
