Michigan's unprecedented 2nd lockdown (aka our Gov is a failed leader)

Post by Robert Faygo » Thu Apr 22, 2021 4:20 pm

The Costs of Michigan's Second Lockdown
(Mackinac Center for Public Policy)
After several weeks of rising COVID-19 cases and deaths, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, using powers granted to the director of the Michigan Department of Health and Humans Services, banned indoor dining on Nov. 18, 2020. The ban remained in place until Feb. 1, 2021.

This report estimates the costs of that policy, in terms of employment losses in the restaurant and bar industry. It finds that employment fell by 23% in this sector over the period, significantly more than any other Midwestern states, including those that also temporarily banned indoor dining.

The report also highlights other costs associated with lockdown policies and assesses whether their purported benefits outweigh these costs. It documents that policies such as these were not recommended by prominent public health organizations prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and that comparing data among states that did not pursue similar policies does not appear to justify these unprecedented policies.
The purported benefit of a shutdown is that it slows the spread of the virus, leading to fewer infections, and thus, fewer fatalities. Data on daily COVID-19 fatality trends, however, do not seem to show a connection between shutdowns and a reduction in deaths.
What limited contact tracing data is publicly available indicates that few COVID-19 infections can be traced to the small businesses that were closed due to pandemic policies, such as bars and restaurants. Data released by the state of New York found that 74% of infections there were traced to household and social gatherings. Only 1.4% were traced to bars and restaurants and only 0.06% were traced to gyms. According to the Jan. 16, 2021, update from the Minnesota Department of Health, only 4% of cases can be traced to “community outbreak,” a category which includes, but is not exclusive to, bars and restaurants.
Data reported by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services shows a similar pattern.
Now you know the real reason there hasn't been a 3rd lockdown. Actual data shows they don't really have the intended impact.

The advice given and then acted on by Whitmer was an unprecedented disaster for our state that didn't have to happen.

Yep. The Whitmer apologists will undoubtedly attack the source, but the report is impossible to dispute.

The $155,000 question is "which side was Robert Gordon on?" I've assumed he was pro-shutdown, but perhaps he was on the other side and by late January his POV was proven correct and he left because he was overruled. The hush money was intended to stop him from singing like a canary.

Failed graph, just like the second shutdown was a failed policy.

The second lockdown worked and saved thousands of lives. The only reason numbers have gone down this time without a lockdowmr is due to the rapid rate of vaccinations. Otherwise, we would have numbers around 15-20K a day. India is out of oxygen after 1 million cases in 3 days.

the decision to not lockdown march and April months has saved lives and brought cases down. So technically no lockdowns work!

No, the vaccines did not work as it takes time. Most of everyone just got their shot as it was open up for eligibility this month.

When you vaccinate, you restrict avenues that the virus has to travel. It's like when you shut down and block the exits off a freeway during a high speed chase. It becomes easier to drive and isolate it.

Two weeks after your first shot of Pfizer or Moderna, they have a 60% efficacy rate. By the second week after the second shot, it is 90-95%. It's science. These breakthrough cases are with people with compromised immune systems who showed little to no symptoms after the vaccine and/or took aspirin or Tylenol before getting the vaccine.

You are definitely one of the dumbest newer posters here besides trollin.

Follow the science Big Gretch? Unfortunately, your science was flawed...

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.

Another science based assessment?

It's just another gray science piece of shit.

Here's Bryce in the 1980s using the same tactics...
