Property Taxes and School Funding
Property Taxes and School Funding
As I've said on here before, I feel most of you have a better grasp on how things like this work than I do. So if it's not genetic that my eyes are brown, feel free to tell me.
It's my understanding property taxes and the lottery fund the schools.
Income and sales taxes (and other taxes) fund the cities, county and state. I'll call these general taxes for lack of a better term.
So I'm curious how all the loss in general taxes due to covid, job loss, whatever, is being blamed for schools going broke. It seems no matter how bad the economy gets, people and businesses are still going to pay their property taxes. And I'll assume lottery sales are as good as ever.
Why is school funding drying up due to Covid?

Re: Property Taxes and School Funding
That is the basic structure.
Schools are going broke because the state is planning on shifting funds on an emergency basis. In Michigan, it is legal to change the school funding formula based on the needs of the overall state government.

Re: Property Taxes and School Funding
Want to know how absurd school funding is in Michigan?
School districts are legally required to have a balanced budget in place with the state on July 1st. Only problem is, they have no accurate idea of what their actual funding will be from the state until October. School budgets are, in reality, nothing more than a guesstimate.

Re: Property Taxes and School Funding
Good luck with paying for school with a voucher of an unknown amount of value in August to a school that still wouldn't know what their budget should be.
The model is horribly broken, vouchers or not.
Re: Property Taxes and School Funding
This turd isn't the product of a voucher

Since Proposal A passed in 1993, school funding changed a bunch. The answer isn't quite so simple as property taxes. School funding post Proposal A is explained in detail here...Mike Oxlong wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 9:43 am

New York and Chicago were all in with respect to their sanctuary status — until they were hit with the challenge of actually providing sanctuary. In other words, typical liberal hypocrisy.
Re: Property Taxes and School Funding
School funding is not taking nearly as big of a hit as expected. Whitmer is directing Federal COVID funds towards schools and focusing the cuts on other parts of the state govt instead. Dept of Corrections is the bullseye target.

That's the current situation.
Re: Property Taxes and School Funding
The next time you have a school mileage in your district vote No. Most people don’t pay attention to their property tax and the issues on the local ballot. I personally will not vote yes on any school mileage to increase my property tax City or County.Rate This wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:23 pmThey are salaried dipshit.lovinlife101 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:20 pmSo, no school, yet you want to pay teachers to do nothing?

We are dealing with a gas station attendant mentality. Work by the hour, only get paid when you show up. The Republicans truly have circumvented the working poor for their bidding.Rate This wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:23 pmThey are salaried dipshit.lovinlife101 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 22, 2020 4:20 pmSo, no school, yet you want to pay teachers to do nothing?

Yup, maybe we should let in some more illegals and drive wages even lower for those folks.

Be careful, some of those business owners employing illegal labor are Trump's biggest supporters.
