Capitalism has problems, no doubt, but government spending should always be "do no harm". That means to not wasting taxpayers money, or giving it to other businesses in an unfair way.

In other words, government shouldn't be in the business of picking winners and losers.

MEDC is a classic example of crony capitalism.
We get lots of contract money to run buses around from the state/feds and now the RTA. It’s a business model but also an example of how moving people is more a service than a super profitable venture.

But many people tout capitalism right up until it seems unfair because somebody got a break and they didn’t. Unfortunately that’s the nature of the beast. All economic systems have a bad and an ugly component. In this case if you aren’t the guy getting the grant the perfect capitalist response is “sucks to be you chump!”.

I have met Carl Bentley(Re-Think I-375) and can assure you that he is not a Republican. He was actually one of my old bosses at another company I left for various reasons. Suffice it to say that I didn't like the way he ran the office, but he's completely right on this.

As I recall, the original-original plan (late 1950s) was to have the 375 expressway connect to the US10 expressway (the Lodge) on Jefferson, as an expressway.

That's a pretty stupid plan. It would have destroyed downtown.

Actually... he might be right. What he's describing is the way the business spur for 375 functions essentially. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if someone in their urban renewal frenzy at the time decided to toy with the idea of making 375 into a loop. Destroying things wasn't a consideration.

paul isn't saying it was a good or bad idea, just that it was the plan at the time. St Louis did a similar thing and I think it really screwed up their riverfront and it's still like that. And I was there a couple months ago and what they tried to do with LaClede's Landing back a few decades ago (and appeared successful at the time) no longer really works because of that expressway "wall" between downtown and the riverfront. If Detroit ever did something like that it should be a tunnel like in Boston but I really don't think there's a need, as folks cutting through the city would be up on I-94 rather than way downtown. Put more money into fixing I-94 (they are going to do something) rather than this 375 crap.

From the AAroads forum https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=10963.0

I-375 was originally intended to be the route of I-75 into downtown Detroit under early proposals. However, the federal government forced Detroit and the State of Michigan to route I-75 further away from the river, so the remnant spur was designated I-375. This is why I-75 has to change from the Fisher Freeway to the Chrysler Freeway north of downtown.

The poster did not state the source.

Rate This - you often seem to take the big government line on matters. Often government-paid teachers have that attitude too, but I thought you worked in the private sector?

Fine, he's extremely naive, often "speculating" about what actually happens in the world outside is bubble.

Duggan wants to put more hotels near Ford Field; that's what this is primarily about, I suspect. He gets to use state and federal tax monies for his pet project. The city has minimal to no skin in the game.
Every project of this magnitude is funded by the feds, they're pulling up an Interstate.

Think about this area 10 years from now. Detroit needs to get rid of the industrial feel, especially downtown.
I-375 has nothing to do with "an industrial feel," in my opinion.
