The best Proposal 3 piece I’ve found

Post by dchildress » Sun Oct 23, 2022 1:20 pm

Both sides of this proposal are using hyperbole to scare people into voting their way.

However, I found this opinion article well-reasoned.

https://www.bridgemi.com/guest-commenta ... a-michigan

Planned Parenthood is behind the language of Proposal 3. That’s not a statement to illicit fear or condemnation. It’s a fact. Planned Parenthood writing Proposal 3 would be like the NRA writing a gun proposal. There’s a lot at stake and interest for them.

Also, it would not “Restore Roe.” It would go much further than Roe. Even those who support Proposal 3 have gotten squeamish when called on the carpet with what the proposal would do. (See the article.)

Also Gretchen Whitmer told the Detroit News editorial board that she supported parental consent and regulations on abortion. Proposal 3 takes both of them away.

While she won’t connect the dots for you, Gretchen Whitmer admits that Proposal 3 goes too far, but won’t verbalize it that way and still wants you to vote for it.

Also, it’s not “Proposal 3 or nothing.” Plenty of proposals can come up to be voted on that can restrict certain abortions at certain trimesters and require parental consent for minors.

Also, Dana Nessel said she won’t prosecute abortions even in this post-Roe world. So if the people charged with enforcing the law refuse to do so, will it happen? No.

There’s no boogieman that both sides are trying to sell you on. However, with the given facts, I believe you can make an informed decision.

Overall, I support Prop 3, but I would feel much better if there was a cut off at 20 weeks. This proposal says nothing about parental consent, transitioning, or anything else the right throws at it. It’s gotten beyond absurd with these baseless attack commercials.
“WHAT???????? STERILIZATION WITHOUT PARENTAL CONSENT?!?!?! VOTE NO ON 3” is a billboard I keep seeing on my way into Detroit down the lodge.
Frankly, I find the talking point “it’s too confusing” insulting and very weak.

Both sides are really competing to see who can tell the biggest fish story before Election Day.

Well, that's an interesting position for bridgemi to take, considering it's pretty much a 180 from their previous article:
https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-gover ... ons-minors
It is not a position Bridge is taking, the link in the OP is a guest commentary from Erin Mersino & Monica Galloway.

Galloway is a former Flint city councilwoman and former president of the Michigan Municipal League, but outside of this I admittedly don't have much insight as to which way she falls as far as left/right overall (though this is fairly telling). Mersino, on the other hand, is chief of Supreme Court and Appellate Practice at the Thomas More Law Center:
The Thomas More Law Center is a Christian, conservative, nonprofit, public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and active throughout the United States. According to its website, its goals are to "preserve America's Judeo-Christian heritage, defend the religious freedom of Christians, restore time-honored moral and family values, protect the sanctity of human life, and promote a strong national defense and a free and sovereign United States of America."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_More_Law_Center

Indeed, the use of "abortionists" in the opening paragraph sets the tone for this hit piece. Well-reasoned, non-hyperbolic, this piece is not.

What's wrong with the term? Oh that's right, we have to sanitize the terminology to sugar coat what is happening during an abort.... errrrr healthcare. We don't want anyone to know the gritty details about what happens to the bab.... errrrrr potential life, or clump of cells.
And herein lies the rub.

“Pro-life” or “anti-abortion.”

“Anti-union” or “pro-worker.”

“Insurgents” or “freedom fighters.”

Whoever defines the terms controls the narrative.

It’s an ongoing battle.
