Radio Favorites

What were your favorite radio stations from your past? For me it was CKLW and Keener in the 60’s. WABX and W4 in the 70"s and the original WLLZ in the 80"s and in the early 90's Z-Rock and 89X. What stations did you enjoy from the past?

Because of Bruce Martyn, Paul Carey, J.P. McCarthy and Jay Roberts, WJR in the 1970s. Got to enjoy Arthur Penhallow on WRIF in the 80s along with Steve Kostan and others. I'm an old horse, no doubt, having drank from the corporate trough myself outstate and man, things were better before my time in the business.

Wixie pre-payola scandal. They never should have let Mickey Schorr go. Keener mid 60's. Best news on top 40 radio. Tight playlist, solid production and great jocks.

I didn't realize Mickey Schorr stores were named after a real person. :lol

Anyways, I loved 89X growing up as a teen in the 90s. Loved Phat Matt for the top 9 at 9.
They/them, non-binary and proud.

Remember that “2000 Mules” was concocted by a circus of elephants.
The right needs to stop worry about what’s between people’s legs. Instead, they should focus on what’s between their ears.
Audacity sucks.

Same here, Caliber. Listening to Keener made me want to be a DJ. Ironic because Mike Joseph wound up firing me from my last radio job in Michigan.

On a good night, I could get and enjoy WABC New York City , WLS and WCFL Chicago. Most of the time WKNR had signal issues on the Eastside of Detroit in the evening hours, so WLS was a great alternative for the Top 40 sound.

As a kid my folks always had WJR on because the news/ sports and Bud Guest show. High school, CKLW then in college it was WCFL and Dick Biondi and Barney Pipp. Then back home split time with JR and Keener till JR fell off the U-M sports wagon.

High School: 93-1 DRQ, 93-9 The River, Q95-5, Planet 96.3, V98.7, WNIC, WOMC, WQRS (I also listened to The Edge some after WQRS died)

College (Grand Rapids): 95.7 W-Lite, I-96, 98.7 WFGR (then classical), 100.5 The River, Star 105.7, Q-Lite/Q106.5, Oldies 107.3 WODJ

As a child in the fifties and sixties it started with WXYZ: Fred Wolf in the Wandering Wigloo started the day, followed by the Don McNeal Breakfast Club out of Chicago, then Joel Sebastion in the afternoon and then Lee Allen “on the horn” in the evening. That changed, basically overnight, on Halloween 1963, when WKNR began it’s legendary leap from the dregs of the ratings (0.3) to the top of the list in 91 days. It was a collection of right talent, right place, right time. In the late sixties early seventies the FM rock stations garnered my attention, with WABX winning out over WKNR-FM,WXYZ-FM & W4. When not listening to music, WJR was the usual destination, but now that dead horse has sailed.
