1090am WCAR

I was up in The Detroit area yesterday and checked to see if they were still Simulcasting WSDS from Ypsilanti, which they are. This seems to be good fit for the station as it's only a 250 watt signal days, at least according to Wikipedia. So, is 1090 still owned by Birach or did Vazquez purchase the station? WSDS's prior owner was Birach if I recall. Just wondering.

1090 has had chronic problems with dead air every time the wind blows. Sima won't pay to fix it.

Walter Wolpin made a lot of money with WCAR (previously WIID) but that was many years ago. Not sure how that business model could be replicated today, but Sima isn't the guy to do it.

In the early 80's, WCAR had a Christian rock program on at night called "Higher Power"which had a double meaning, as WCAR is one of those rare AM facilities that actually increases power after sunset. WIID/WCAR was a neighborhood station for Livonia, Westland, Garden City, etc. Walter Wolpin became quite the philanthropist in his later years.

No. Malrite owned WBRB and WERB (now WCAR)

I can't remember if Wolpin bought 1090 from Malrite, or if there was an owner in between. I'm sure historian Chris what's his name will be along shortly to fill in the blanks for us.

In the 1960s, WERB got out quite well. It had a Talk format later as WTAK, and had several up and coming, well known Talk show hosts as I recall. It may be all the development over the years that's affected the signal. Also, the ever increasing electrical noise.

I remember being in the car with my Father, He always loved talk radio and had WTAK 1090 on, Dad enjoyed listening to Paul Winter. Dad also loved WQTE 560 back in the day. Back then both stations were daytime only.

We can do "1090, Extreme Radio" for a few hours a week. Where's Gonzo Greg these days? Tool, Chevelle, Foo Fighters, and V-Shape Mind will sound great on AM. My friend Bill Gamble, from 94.7 The Zone WZZN Chicago can consult.
