An alternative rock station that sounds a million times better than Fault 98.7

Post by MWmetalhead » Tue May 16, 2023 9:10 pm

...unfortunately, the benchmark is a station that existed in 1997.

Here is a great extended aircheck of the former 92-1 The Edge in Lansing.

I listened to the edge a lot when it was on 94.1, thought they had an awesome playlist.

another one I really miss is buzz 106.5 .....with that deep voice voiceover guy "W-B-U-Z Delta-Toledo". Also WKRK 97.1 K-Rock. and while we're at it, Z-Rock 102.7 was cool too.

also that first song in the aircheck is one of my favs LOL

I always thought Banana 101.5 was good.

I used to like the Banana but it’s apparent that they are running Clownsquare’s corporate rock playlist now. Way too much classic rock that their sister classic rock station 103.1 covers also. Sounds way too similar to their Grand Rapids sister station 97.9 GRD

I’ll agree. Even though I live in the GRD area, I stream Z93 from Saginaw. :hat

I’m on my way to Grand Rapids to meet with a client. GRD is playing over the Hills and far away by Led Zeppelin. WTF? Why is an active rock station playing a moldy oldie from 50 years ago?

They were always a treat to listen to on the way to Mackinaw. Then in Mackinaw, there was the Zone.

Because the current product blows and the gold cuts are where it's at.

I will say Z93's commercial breaks are absurdly lengthy. They only play about 11 songs an hour on average, which is pitiful.

"My Friends" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers - haven't heard that one on the radio in at least 10 years (and on a Canadian station at that). Of the 15 or so requests I made a few years ago to the 107.7 The Bay all-request Friday (shame they only did that for about 5 months), this was the only song they didn't have.

Looking back through my FB messages, these were my requests that summer, all but that one got played:

Hoobastank - Disappear
Wallflowers - 6th Avenue Heartache
Live - I, Alone
Tonic - Open up your Eyes
Incubus - Pardon Me
INXS - Elegantly Wasted
The Rembrandts - Just the Way it is, Baby
U2 - Staring at the Sun
311 - Down
Bob Seger - Shakedown
3 Doors Down - Its not my Time
Blues Traveler - Hook
Red Hot Chili Peppers - My Friends (Sorry, We don't have that one)
Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen - Mission Impossible Theme

Yup on The Buzz! That was thee the station when I was in high school, I remember seeing cars around with buzz foam balls on cars antenna's. I had a sticker on my 1st car. Z-Man was always my favorite DJ. Not sure who did the voice over but WQTE 95.3 used the same guy for a long time. If I recall, I think 94.5 used the guy when they were K-rock Toledo's new rock perspective.

K-love Detroit was ok but the whole slamming WRIF thing got old.

Z-rock, omg! I could on and on. I wish I would of been of age to hear Z-rock in the mid 80s, I've heard airchecks with them playing crazy stuff like King Diamond.

Thanks for the find, that truly is a good capture of a solidly programmed Alternative station during a time I'd consider to be the apex of the format itself.

I haven't heard that Cowboy Mouth single in a very long time -- I suppose because it only scraped the lower portion of the charts, it never became "part of the format". The same could be said about 7M3 - "Lucky"... both great to hear again. Someone needs to do a "deep cuts 90s Alternative gold" type station... but maybe I'm just dreaming.

The other lesson I've learned from this, is that beer could be ridiculously cheap in 1997.
