Weekend Evening News

Post by TRTV » Sat Jan 21, 2023 3:56 pm

Will Detroit ever get a weekend 5pm newscast? So many of the top markets have a weekend 5pm. Considering a lot of the time sports does go until 6pm for some of the year, but also a lot of the times shows that don’t matter are playing in the 5pm slot. Would they ever consider a 5pm weekend newscast at 2,4,7? The short 6pm 30 minute newscast seems like such a waste to even have anchors and reporters come in for such a short show and wait until 10 or 11pm for the next show.

Is there an audience to make that profitable? If so it would have happened by now. Doing an hour at 5 would require permanent staffing of at least 2 more reporters and photographers as well as a show producer and that show would be preemted on a fairly regular basis. In union stations you can't jerk people's schedules around to make that work without it costing you in penalties or overtime days.

I don't see a weekend 5PM newscast in my opinion just isn't going to make money or very little profit as well with sports taking up 6 to months out of the year just doesn't make much sense. WWMT did air a weekend Noon newscast 6 or 7 years in the early 90s but stopped airing it in the winter or spring of 2000 because of sports. I also believe wasn't making much money in my opinion, WOODTV, and WZZM didn't add a noon newscast on the weekend.

Does the union part go for all 3 stations here?

WXYZ also does a 7pm newscast on the weekends.

They'll make it streaming and attempt to get around it. Unions allowed management to blow holes into their contracts with stipulations for the internet, and now they're deeply regretting it.

I think streaming a 5pm on the weekends would bring in negligible revenue.

I just do not see it happening on the major network channels as its already booked up.

If CW can get a news crew, then that would be the best bet for those wanting to watch on the old rabbit ears.

It would, today. But news is going to be about all the locals have as the networks are going around them.

Focus on this question and think about sports schedules.
