Does anyone have a polka show in Detroit?

Post by Greg Buben » Fri Oct 14, 2022 11:32 am

Last weekend was the annual Pulaski Days celebration in Grand Rapids and that got me to thinking does anybody do
polkas at all in the Detroit market? I know at one time there were ethnic stations that played polkas and an AM Catholic
religious station also played polkas but does polka radio still exist in the Detroit market? Detroit should have polkas on
the radio because of the Polish and their Carpathian mountain cousins the Czecks and the Slovaks have significantly
settled in the Detroit area as well as throughout MI. Plus the Germans have always had their "oom pah pah" polkas
as well and they significantly settled in MI too. If anyone knows about polkas on the radio in Detroit please post the
information because I'm really curious if polka radio still exists in Detroit.

If you can pull in WCBN 88.3 from Ann Arbor, they have a polka show from 6:30-7:00 pm on Wednesdays.

I have pleasant memories of listening to the late Johnny Sadrack's polka show, which broadcast weekday afternoons (at least that I'm aware of) on the "station of the nations" WMZK-FM, 97.9 during the late 1970's. WNZK 680/690's program schedule has "Polish Varieties" listed between 10am and noon on Saturdays. A caveat, Birach Broadcasting's schedules can be unreliable.

TV Warren did a decade ago, but polka king Fred-Merle got fired.

They/them, non-binary and proud.

TV Warren is still running the old polka shows daily at 9:00 am and 5:00 pm on XFinity/Comcast channel 12 and WOW channel 18 (IN WARREN).

RIP Fred Merle.

From waaay back, and I can't remember on what Detroit station, there was "Polka Joe" and "Waltzing Wanda."

Not Detroit, but Mollie B, Jimmy Sturr are still airing, along with Big Joe Polka Show reruns on RFD-TV

A station in Toledo had a polka show for many years, but the main host died earlier this year, so I don't know if it still airs.

There should be a polka show on WPON, but I can't hear it over the noise floor good enough to listen. Years ago, the former WIID 1090 (later WCAR) had more than one polka show, if I recall correctly, when Walter Wolpin owned the station.

In Toledo, we had a weekend polka show on WCWA during my time there in the mid 80's... probably the same one mentioned above.

Could be. Hard to say. It was about 36 years ago.

I remember back in the 70s or early 80s my Dad listening to a polka program every week from a station in Saginaw MI. I believe it was on Saturday or Sunday around noon.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

WMIC-AM 660 in Sandusky airs polkas for three hours on Saturdays and two hours on Sundays both starting at 1pm. They're easily audible in much of Oakland and Macomb counties, and if not, they stream.
